PTQ M15… (ENG)

Hello Despair Crew!

When I said I wasn’t going to play any Limited PTQs this season, I really meant it. My winning era in Magic is long gone and in the past few weeks even MTGO isn’t working very well so, I decided to take a break. This way I could get back in shape for the Teams GP here in Sao Paulo.

However I had some friends that wanted a ride to the PTQ (Sao Jose dos Campos, the city of the PTQ is 110kms from where I live) and then 2 days before the PTQ I had one friend in Campinas that had no way to get to the PTQ in time on Sunday (first bus would get him too late to event place) and another that decided to come from Brasilia on the last possible moment.

In the end one of them lost his flight, but at that moment I was already commited into bringing other 3 with me to the PTQ, so let’s go. At least prizes would go down to Top64 and I was expecting around 128 players, I guess I can at least top64 even with almost 0 practice with BNG, right? I played only 4 Sealed Events on Magic Online and 0 Drafts before the PTQ, as I was really set on skipping them.

The pool I opened before the swap was great, had a bunch of great tools for a good UG deck. The pool I got was good but wasn’t easy to build as the one I opened, so it took me some time to sort things up before setting on playing BW.

I started the PTQ 5-0 and then double ID into the Top8. I lost only a single game during swiss rounds eventhough I was facing a bunch of great PTQ players. I mulliganed way less times than my opponents and had some of them getting either mana screwed or flooded.

During the ID Rounds I tried to read something about drafting BNG but I knew It was just too late. I thought I could at least save something as I had drafted a lot of Triple THS before the Pro Tour.

I started with some green picks (Courser of Kruphix p1p1) but it quickly dried out and I had a bunch of Blue cards. I was ready to abandon green if I opened something good in some other color but I got two Horizon Chimeras at the start of the second pack and stayed Ug. I knew Green wasn’t coming from the right but somehow It wasn’t coming from the left either. I know I had some not so easy picks and probably made a bunch of mistakes. Eventhough I had a bunch of THS drafts before, they were 5 months ago, so I didn’t remember much by now.

I lost 2-1 in the Top8 against the eventual winner and I can’t even complain. My lack of knowledge on the format doomed me. I didn’t even knew Pheres-Band Tromper would put a +1/+1 COUNTER and not +1/+1 until EOT, that could have cost me the game I won in the Top8.

At the beggining of 2013 I felt renewed after a bad second semester in 2012 as I started it out with a Top8 on an Online Modern PTQ. A format I was playtesting a lot. Now in 2014 I have two Top8s : MOCS Cube Limited and a THS/BNG Limited PTQ. Both formats that I didn’t test at all… It’s always nice to be fighting for the top spots and since April last year I had 0 IRL PTQ Top8s but still… Now it’s time to relax and wait for the Teams GP.

PTQ M15… (PT)

Olá galera do desespero!

Quando eu disse que não ia jogar PTQs Limited nesta season, eu estava falando sério. Minha série de vitórias desapareceu tem tempo e nas últimas semanas até o MTGO não estava indo muito bem, então eu decidi me dar um tempo do jogo. Assim eu poderia voltar em melhor forma para o GP Trios aqui em São Paulo.

Porém, eu tinha alguns amigos querendo/precisando de carona para o PTQ (São José dos Campos fica a +- 110kms daonde eu moro) e na véspera um parceiro (Enzo) decidiu comprar um vôo de última hora e precisaria de alguma forma de chegar em SJC além de outro brother (Jonais) que estava em Campinas e totalmente perdido de como consegueria chegar no PTQ a tempo, já que o primeiro ônibus que saia no domingo pela manhã já era tarde de mais. Além deles os meus pseudo-vizinhos também só dependiam de eu dar o “OK” para ir jogar, apenas faltava o carro (Rhodner e MBC).

No fim o parceiro que vinha de avião perdeu o vôo dele no sábado mas neste momento eu já estava comprometido com os outros 3 que iriam comigo no carro, então partiu. Ao menos a premiação ia até o Top64 e por algum motivo eu li errado que seriam NOVE packs, mas claro, foi um trick que eu dei em mim mesmo. 3 Packs de Premiação + 6 abertos na Pool, ai sim seriam 9 packs por 150 reais. De qualquer forma, mesmo sem treino algum eu acho que consigo um Top64 em um torneio que eu esperava algo em torno de 120 jogadores. Eu joguei 4 Selados no Magic Online e 0 drafts antes do PTQ. Eu reaelmente tinha acertado que não jogaria nenhum PTQ.

A Pool que eu abri antes do swap era bem boa, repleta de cartas para um deck UG muito bom. A pool que eu peguei era boa e não era das mais fácil de se montar (ao menos não para mim), então eu demorei um bom tempo para perceber que o BW era provavelmente a melhor opção.

Comecei o PTQ 5-0 e dei 2 IDs para entrar no Top8. Eu perdi apenas um jogo durante o suiço mesmo eu tendo enfrentado vários bons jogadores da cena de PTQs Brasileira. Eu mulliguei bem menos do que meus adversários e muitas vezes eles estavam com problemas nos terrenos, seja a falta deles ou de uma cor ou eles em excesso.
Durante os IDs eu tentei ler os artigos que o Enzo me enviava pelo celular mas eu sabia que era tarde de mais para aprender algo. Ao menos eu tinha draftado um bocado de Triplo THS antes do Pro Tour e durante a season de PTQs para Atlanta, então eu estaria manjando ao menos parte do formato não é?

Comecei com alguns picks verdes mas que rapidamente sumiram, porém o Azul estava fluindo bem. No começo do segundo Pack eu estava preparado para abandonar o Verde se necessário caso eu abrisse alguma bomba branca, porém eu acabei foi pegando dois Horizon Chimera bem cedo e fiquei no Ug mesmo sabendo que o G não viria da direita, o que aconteceu foi que ele não veio da esquerda também e acabei com este deck. Sei que devo ter me complicado em muitos picks pois além de não conhecer BNG, eu já tinha me esquecido boa parte do que aprendi em THS. Meu último draft de THS foi em Dezembro e é comum em tantos meses assim eu ter me esquecido de algumas coisas.

Perdi de virada no Top8 para o eventual campeão e nem posso reclamar. Meu desconhecimento do formato era tão nítido que eu nem se quer sabia que Pheres-Band Tromper colocava MARCADOR +1/+1 e não apenas +1/+1 até o final do turno, o que poderia ter me custado o primeiro jogo da partida.

No começo de 2013 eu me senti renovado após um segundo semestre ruim em 2012 pois eu comecei com um Top8 em um PTQ Modern. Formato em que eu estava treinando e tinha muita expectativa. Agora em 2014 eu já acumulo dois Top8s : MOCS Cube Limited e PTQ THS/BNG Limited. Ambos formatos em que eu não treinei… É sempre bom estar brigando no topo e eu já estava sem um Top8 em PTQ desde o WMCQ Paulistano do ano passado mas mesmo assim.. bom agora é relaxar e aguardar o GP Trios.

Segunda tentaviva para Atlanta… segunda falha

Olá galera do desespero!

Na semana passada eu joguei um PTQ para Atlanta aqui na minha cidade, São Paulo.

Eu sabia que ia ser difícil ter um deck tunado em tempo já que não teriamos muito tempo para testar no MTGO.

Após um monte de X-2s com o Red Devotion nos Daily Events e sabendo que as coisas seriam difíceis para o Burn já que UW Control seria um dos decks mais jogados no torneio, Eu decidi deixar meus Templos do Triunfo em casa e tentar algumas outras coisas. Eu achava que alguma versão de UW era o melhor deck para o torneio mas não me sinto capaz de navegar um PTQ de 9 rodadas + Top8 jogando com um deck de Sphinx’s Revelation.dec então RG Monsters e Black Midranges eram minhas principais escolhas para o PTQ.

Eu sabia que queria splashar algo nos Black Midranges. Eu não tinha certeza se eu queria apenas um pequeno Splash Branco ou ir com tudo com Obzedat e Elspeth ou até tentar o SPlash Verde. Eu acreditava que o Splash Verde me dava a melhor chance contra UW Control já que eu não teria tantas remoções mortas no main deck quanto as outras versões mas eu não gostava da inconsistência de não ter uma scry land nas cores do deck. O Splash Branco me dava o trump pro “mirror” : Blood Baron of Vizkopa

Joguei alguns jogos com o Jonais, Bolovo, Rastaf, Batutinha e Alemão na sexta e dei uma olhada no local do torneio no sábado, já que estavam rolando torneios Standard lá. Eu não joguei tanto quanto queria no sábado já que eu ainda não tinha fechado as cartas para jogar nos Grinders. Como eu não tinha tanta experiência com o RG, Eu decidi jogar com um deck Preto.

No fim eu e o Batutinha jogamos com este deck :

Acreditava que a gente ia ter bem mais decks Pretos com o splash Branco (e alguns com Verde) do que Mono Pretos, e esse é basicamente o único matchup em que eu não quero Lifebane Zombie. E eu estava certo, dos 283 jogadores no PTQ (o maior que já joguei aqui e provavelmente o maior PTQ brasileiro de todos os tempos e muito bem organizado por sinal), apenas 30 jogadores estavam com decks em que eu iria tirar os Lifebane ZOmbies pós-side. Com o aumento de UWs, decidimos trazer os Obzedats para o main e isso também valeu a pena.

Metagame Breakdown

Infelizmente eu consegui apenas um 3-2 antes de dropar. Minhas partidas :

– R1 : UW 2-0
– R2 : RG Monsters/Devotion? 1-2 (12 bixos de mana e Garruk mas não vi nem BTE nem Nykthos)
– R3 : Rw Burn 2-1
– R4 : RGw Monsters 2-1
– R5 : UW Devotion 1-2

O Batutinha estava vivo até a oitava rodada mas acabou eliminado também.

Eu ainda acho que nossa lista era boa e não me arrependo de ter jogado com ela. Felizmente o parceiro Pedro ‘Rorix’ Carvalho ganhou o PTQ Jogando de Rw Devotion, um deck que ele costumava dizer que era horrível e talz =) Também tivemos uma versão de Rb Devotion no TOp8 que de certa forma eu ajudei e da mesma forma um Bg Devotion no Top16.
Então algo para salvar o final de semana em termos de magic, né?

Comi um monte de coisas gostosas durante o final de semana e tive a oportunidade de estar por perto de um monte de pessoas legais que conheci pelo Magic the Gathering, a maioria morando bem longe que PTQs são a chance de revê-los hehe

Valeu Bolov0 pela hospitalidade já que com a possibilidade de tiroteios do outro lado da rua do meu apartamento me levaram a durmir fora de casa. Também obrigado ao Antonio, Enzo, MBC, Rhodner, Fernando e Mateus por me emprestarem cartas mais uma vez =) Me desculpem por desapontá-los de novo o que virou rotina em meus torneios Premier nos últimos 9 meses.

Second shot at qualifying for Atlanta… second fail

Hello despair crew!

Last weekend I played on a PTQ for Atlanta here in my city, Sao Paulo.

I knew It would be hard to get a new tuned deck in time as we wouldn’t be able to test much on MTGO.

After a bunch of X-2s with Red Devotion on Daily Events and knowing that things would be bad for Burn as UW Control would be one of the most played decks on the tournament, I decided to let my Temple of Triumphs at home and try some other stuff. I thought some sort of UW Control deck was the best deck for the tournament but did’t feel I was capable of navigating through a 9 Rds PTQ + Top8 playing a Sphinx’s Revelation.dec so RG Monsters and Black Midrange decks were my top choices going into this PTQ.

I knew I wanted to splash something on the Black Midrange decks. Wasn’t sure If I just wanted a small White splash or the full with Obzedats/Elspeths or even the Green Splash. I believe the Green splash to be the best for fighting against UW Control decks as you don’t have as many dead removal in the main deck as the other versions but I don’t like the Inconsistency on the not having the on color scry lands. White splash gives us the trump on the “mirror” : Blood Baron of Vizkopa.

I played some games with Jonais, Bolov0, Rastaf, Batutinha and Alemao on friday and lurked around the tournament place on saturday as there were some small standard tournaments happening. Didn’t play as much on saturday as I wanted and didn’t have an actual deck to play on the saturday grinders. As I didn’t have as much experience playing the RG deck I decided to just play a Black deck.

In the end me and Batutinha played this :

I thought we would have more Black decks splashing White (and some splashing Green) than actual Mono Black decks, and that’s basicly the only matchup we don’t really want Lifebane Zombie. And I was right, out of the 283 players on the PTQ (the largest I’ve played over here and probably the largest lifetime on Brazil but also very well organized) only 30 were playing decks we would side the Lifebanes out. With the increase of UW We also decided to bring Obzedats to the main deck and It also paid of.

Metagame Breakdown

Unfortunately I only managed a 3-2 before dropping. My matches :

– R2 : RG Monsters/Devotion? 1-2 (12 mana dorks and Garruk but didn’t see any Nykthos or BTE)

I still think our list was good and don’t regret playing it. Gladly buddy Pedro ‘megafone’ Carvalho took the PTQ down playing Rw Devotion, a deck he used to say was horrible and so on =) Also there was a Rb Devotion build on the Top8 that I helped out and a Bg Devotion deck on the Top16.

So something to save magic-wise from the weekend?

I ate a bunch of nice stuff during the weekend and had the opportunity to be around a bunch of nice people that I met through Magic the Gathering, most live so far away that PTQs are the chance to see them hehe

In 3 weeks I’ll have my last chance for Atlanta and one week after that my first (of two) for Portland in GP Buenos Aires. What to try now? Try to make a RGx Monsters deck work or go back to Red Devotion?

My 2013 in Review (English)

Hello despair crew!

I’m going to write a review of my 2013, with a summary of all relevant tournaments that I played and will talk more about Pro Tour Theros (Dublin), as I didn’t write a report about it.
I’ll be editing my text as I find any grammar mistakes or something like that, Hope you guys like It.

As you can see on my 2012’s Review (My 2012 in Review (English)), my year didn’t end very well but my 2013 started way better.

*** First Season

** Modern Season

Modern is the format that I have more knowledge and experience, eventhough It isn’t the format that I play more atm. I could play in 3 Online PTQs this season :

– December 24th / 2012 : 5-4
– January 5th / 2013: 1-3 drop
– January 12th / 2013 : 8-1 in the swiss losing in the Top8

I played Jund in all of them and on both January’s tournaments I had the privilege to play lists tuned by the greatest Modern Midrange Builder of the world : Willy Edel

I didn’t do well at the first PTQ but Edel’s list ended up winning the tournament and the January 12th’s PTQ was the day I got back into a nice result. It was frustrating to lose against a good matchup in the Top8 even more as I had already beaten him in the swiss and I considered myself favorite against all other decks in the Top8 but IT was awesome to feel competitive again.
I had another problem in the Modern season as I didn’t own IRL nor MTGO cards to play so I simply couldn’t play any more PTQs.

** MOCS Seasons 1- 4

The first season of the year was the busiest of the year as the Promo card was Force of Will (one of the most expensive cards in MTGO). Eventhough I was qualified at least for the Preliminaries I didn’t have a Legacy deck to play so I was out.

On the second season I could join the Preliminares with the Naya Humans deck most Brazilians played in PT Montreal :

I only didn’t like the matchup against Rg Aggro and after losing 2 times against it, I was eliminated.
Season 3 was RTR/GTC sealed and I was also stopped at the preliminaries with a 2-2 and I didn’t even play in Season 4.

**GP Rio de Janeiro

Here’s the main event of the year for the Brazilians! The GP in our country.
This GP certainly counts with my biggest despair and success history of my Magic career and I wrote about it with a lot of details on my report here (Portuguese) :

The despair here was huge, counting with our initial plan to have a training house falling apart after my car was robbed and after that after some errors in the Post Office I didn’t have a deck to play in the Modern PTQ that happened in Rio one week before the GP. I seriously considered not even going to the GP anymore but in the end with a lot of magic and despair and with me thinking I wouldn’t be able to get together the Naya Midrange deck that I was playing on MTGO for weeks, I ended up with megafone/edb’s tae on Aristocrats the day before the GP. With all the magic working on my side I easily 5-0 the Trial and then the GP =D

I wanna thank again everyone that were part of it and were celebrating and happy with me! I know a bunch of people will remember the hot weather from GP Rio or any of the problems with the neighborhood but I don’t think I’ll find a tournament as special as this one anytime soon, and that If I’ll ever be able to do it!

With the 8 Pro Points from GP Rio I had 16 on the season and with that I had a small shot at achieving gold (I needed a Top16 in San Diego). I was so happy to be in this position and with the Silver I had 2 byes for more than a year (until August 2014) which is almost impossible with the amount of tournaments I play IRL.

*** Second Season

In april we had the news on the changes of Pro Player’s Club and with my new Status as Silver I was going to be qualified for the next PT I wasn’t already qualified. That means that I Could still play PTQs for Dublin and If qualify for It then I’d postpone my Silver slot for Valencia and so on! Even without the plane ticket I was very happy to be qualified for another Pro Tour and even before playing the one in San Diego.

** Standard Season

Aristocrats Era
With both PTQs for Dublin and the WMCQs for Amsterdan being Standard, I had my deck set for the beginning of the season. Yes, I was going to play Aristocrats until Dragon’s Maze enters standard. My results :
– WMCQ São Paulo : 7-0-2 in the Swiss, lost in the Top8
– PTQ São Paulo : 5-3, losing the win-id on round 7
– PTQ Rio de Janeiro : 1-4

/I played something really close to that in those events, I know at some point I was playing at least one Dead Weight and for sure I had the Boros Charm and the Rakdos’s Return at the WMCQ

After opening 7-0 in the WMCQ in Sao Paulo I had the amazing record of 20-3 playing Aristocrats! I even considered not taking the second ID on that tournament so I could guarantee the 1st seed. In the end I’m just too soft and Couldn’t even try to dreamcrush anyone and somehow managed to be the 1st seed anyway winning 130 packs for that! After a bunch of mulls on the Top8 I was eliminated but I couldn’t be too sad with so many packs with me. Unfortunately that was the only chance I had to qualify for the World Cup, so I had to postpone that dream. With the San Diego trip around the corner and possibly Dublin in 5 months I couldn’t afford to travel to more PTQs/WMCQs. =(
The PTQ in Rio was the smallest I played since 2001. After winning round1 I lost 4 in a row, yeah, I didn’t drop trying to recover my honor and It got even worse hehe =(

End of Season

After coming back from PT San Diego I played 3 Online PTQs :

– Standard with Naya Midrange : 1-2 Drop
– Standard with Jund : 6-3, 33º Place
– Modern Masters Sealed : 2-2 Drop

With Aristocrats losing its edge on the format after Dragon’s Maze entered Standard I tried my way with 2 different decks on Online PTQs with no success. After starting 0-1 I was 6-1 at some point with Jund but ended up losing the last 2 rounds to end out of the Top32 due to my bad tiebreakers.

We also had the tactical support of our journalist : Pedro ‘Toninho Pedrosa. That even without being qualified, made the travel!
We ended up one Brazilian short on this trip as Pedro ‘Megafone’ Carvalho wouldn’t be able to make the trip =( *for the reasons everyone knows about
I decided to make the “full” 3 weeks trip, playing both the GP before the PT and the one after it.

* GP Portland

Everyone but Tutuzim were going to this GP as well! And everyone made the same simple decision : To play the same deck as we played in the Modern season 2 months ago. This was the problem of having a Constructed GP one week before the PT with a different format. No one would be able to focus on it properly.
Me and Edel played this list :

I can say this was the only time one of the Modern’s Genius wasn’t perfect predicting the metagame and I blame that on the fact we were so worried in trying something new in Block and learning how to draft that we coulnd’t focus as much as we wanted on Modern. Using Blood Baron of Vizkopa in Modern was awesome but wasn’t the right time for it, maybe now or in some weeks at PT Valencia?

I had 2 byes for this tournament and that only because I won GP Rio. If I had one less in on the GP Rio’s weekend I’d have only one bye. Maybe that’s a flaw on the Byes System. Winning a GP isn’t enough to have 3 byes for the next one but winning a PTQ gets you so close to having 3 byes and with 2 guaranteed

I managed to end the first day at 7-2 after being paired against a bunch of complicated machups (RG Tron, 4c Gifts, 5c Zoo, Scapeshift, Melira and Mirror). I think I played quite well during day1 and was happy to day2. Only Obama of the other Brazilians managed to day2 as well.

On Day2 I couldn’t perform as well as day1 and after some punts I was 1-3 in the day and eliminated from the money, no time to be sad about this and gogogo playtest some more block and draft.
It was a shame to play a GP in my favorite format without the proper training and focus on it, I really hope to have the opportunity to play a Modern GP again soon

**LET’S GO SAN DIEGO
Our hotel was really close to the event site and It was an awesome hotel! Full of Silver Buckets for Ice, bunch of chandeliers that would cost more than my life probably and everything else. As we were all in the same hotel IT was easier to discuss block and draft and when Obama and Celso weren’t at the same hotel, they stayed with us until late late night.
It was very hard to find something for Block and after more than a hundred games on Magic Online and trying out a bunch of different decks, Edel had another of his “genius” lists for us. After two 4-0s in a row we were set on the deck, only Enzo played Esper and the rest of us :

We considered Esper to be the best deck on the format followed by Mono Red and that both would be the most played decks of the tournament.
We were wrong about Mono Red as it wasn’t even close to be one of the most played decks and Esper was way more played than we expected followed closely by other Revelation decks.
I wasn’t feeling comfortable with drafting. I tried a bunch of queues on magic online to no success and I was basicly totally lost in the format.

I managed to 3-3 the Draft Portion of the Pro Tour. 2-1 on my first draft that I thought It was at least OK if the manabase worked and a 1-2 in the second that was a pile. Back in PT Seattle I was disappointed with a 3-3 in Draft, because I thought I was drafting quite well the format, on the other hand in San Diego I was relieved with a 3-3, I thought It could be way worse.

With a 7-2 in Block, for the first time I finished a Pro Tour in the Money! I was very happy to make money at the Pro Tour eventhough I was very far from the Top16 that I needed for Gold. The bad part was that I was the only Brazilian in the Money in that Pro Tour. Only 3 of us made day2.

*GP Guadalajara
Only Edel from San Diego’s team roUrix would make the trip to Guadalajara as well. There we would be joined by PV and the Surreal Mister Ferry. Almost no Pro Player made the trip and if I’m not mistaken we had 0 Americans in Guadalajara.
The first deck I tried was the old and good Aristocrats but I failed. As I didn’t have the courage to enter the tournament with Bant Hexproof (would be basicly the same list as PV played there), I decided to use the same strategy as I used at the PT : Just play #Edelgenius

Our scouting reports said the top 3 most played decks would be : Mono Red Aggro, Jund Midrange and Junk Reanimator. And they were so right, I played against 10 of those in 12 rounds and I even beat the other 2 decks I faced! Anyway I ended up 1 point short of a money finish as my last round opponent wasn’t sure he could ID or not. The problem is that the pairings bugged so even in the last round we didn’t have the usual 1st vs 2nd, 3rd vs 4th and so on and then I got paired with one of the two, among 12, players that wasn’t sure they could ID to get into the Top 64 =(

** MOCS Seasons 5 até 8
I ended up not even playing the preliminaries for seasons 5 and 6.
Starting with Season 7, I had the 10 QPs bonus from my Silver level but even without those I managed 35 QPs myself to qualify directly for the seaon finale! However my DGR Sealed pool was so bad, but so bad that I even dropped without even playing at all to enjoy a good friend’s birthday.
Season 8 Was Modern and again I qualified directly to the Season Finale. I played BG Midrange without any splashes, which was the new take on “Jund” variants after the Player’s Championship. I started 0-1 and then won 4 in a row until eventually losing the the eventual winner, Prolepsis, playing Melira, the deck that is my arch-nemesis of the format since its beginning. I ended up 5-3, good only for a Top64 of 204 players with my bad brakers

*** Third Season
And we arrived at the most dark season for me. The limited one.
Unfortunately It was also time to say good bye to my favorite card : Falkenrath Aristocrat

I played two Standard tournaments in September and the one I used the gorgeous Falkenrath, I ended up winning! Got a nice playmat and 2 DGM’s Boosters Boxes out of it ^^

It took me a while to jump again on the Aristocrats bandwagon after Xathrid Necromancer’s release. But I could enjoy it a lot on MTGO anyway. And that was the best part of my second semester… and by far.

** Pro Tour Theros in Dublin
After a lot of search and thought I decided to buy my ticket to play in the Pro Tour. I knew It wasn’t going to be cheap but I didn’t want to throw away a chance to pay in the PT, we never know when it might be the last chance for it.
I decided to also attend GP Oklahoma City, on the week before the PT. I know a lot of people would think It’s bad to attend a GP a few days before the PT, because it would interrupt the practice. That can be the case if the format of the GP isn’t the same as the PT and unlike Portland, OKC would be on the same Limited format as the PT! Before PT Seattle, I felt playing in GP San Jose helped me a lot on that Limited, even if the format of the GP was Teams and I was really looking for anything to help me get a good result in Dublin.

* GP Oklahoma City
The only Brazilian qualified Player to make this trip was Edel. We would be joined by the Surreal Mister Ferry!
Our days before the GP were very busy with our Standard practice. However we didn’t get any conclusion on the format and would be waiting for the second SCG Open to see if anything changes.
On the Limited part I had played only 2 Sealeds and One draft before the GP.
That was my sealed pool at GP OKC :

Eventhough I didn’t have much experience in the format and played against 4 different people with Elspeths and 3 with Dragons, I managed to 7-2 day1! The cool part was being called twice to the feature match area. One day on the video coverage where I was destroyed in 4 or 5 minutes by Shuhei Nakamura and the other when I defeated Brock Parker!
I would need a 4-2 or maybe a 3-2-1 on day 2 to get a money finish.
That was my first draft :

I thought I could at least 2-1 with it but I ended up losing to an opponent with Reaper of the Wilds, Whip of Erebos and Xenagos and surprisingly the topdecked card that beat me in 2 games wasn’t any of those! It was the Mogis Marauder from the top to give enough unblockable damage that beat me. After that I got crushed by an Aggressive GW deck.
With a 1-2 start I’d probably need to 3-0 the second draft, something that I’ve only done once in my life. Ended up with this pile :

Yeah, I even built it wrongly and after sideboard I was taking the splash away. I managed to win the first 2 rounds with very close battles, always 2-1 full of despair and was in good shape to draw to get in the Top64! However my last round opponent didn’t want to draw and after me losing my 8th land drop for 2 turns I died without being able to cast my game winning Boulderfall (yeah, really hehe). For the second time in a row I was out of the top 64 for 1 point after being able to draw =(
Anyway I felt more comfortable with Theros Drafting and was really cool to be on the feature match of an American GP. To think a bit more than one year ago, even after staying close to the top for the whole GP Sao Paulo2012 I was only set for the featre match on round 14 and the coverage was even saying no one with a Top8 was fighting in the Top, ignoring my old Top8 in GP Curitiba. So yeah, It was so positive to be in the feature match here so It was a happy weekend after all.

The first impact at arriving in Ireland was the customs employe saying that he was a MTG player as well, and that he wanted to come by the Pro Tour to watch! After that the good old taxi driver with his awesome accent that was very hard to understand hehe
We had a logistic problem this time. Eventhough the hotel me, Megafone and Edel were staying weren’t far from the other Brazilians, the cold weather made it difficult for us to meet more times, so we basicly couldn’t playtest much together.

Total Despair on the day before the PT. What to do in this Standard?
We kept trying a bunch of different strategies. The deck we had worked more was a Rw Aggro but we knew It wasn’t powerful enough. We tried both Naya and Junk Midrange decks but both failed. We also worked hard on some sort of Green Aggro deck with Boon Satyr, Polukranos and friends and for some time that would be our deck at the PT, we tried with all the possible splashes but we couldn’t get it anywhere we felt comfortable with.

On the days before this PT we saw a bunch of qualified players with their fake accounts playing on the most diverse MTGO queues, so a lot of decks, like Mono Blue Devotion, weren’t exactly new for us we even tried to make it work the RB Aggro Ari Lax’s crew wre going to play. But we lacked more people to play and test everything possible =(
*S2 Jonais and Enzo that borrowed me so many cards!

We ended up with basicly no time to make a tour on the city, It was the whole time playing and trying to find something. The deck I got more wins in practice was an Esper Control list, basicly the same CAlcano used on the first SCG Open but we knew we woulnd’t be able to get a good Esper list for ourselves and neither play it in a 16 rounds long tournament. The worst part? I still needed to find the actual cards to play and time was running out.
A few hours before the PT, Edel tried out a new genius idea : A Bg Midrange deck! He quickly X-0 a bunch of queues and was set on it. So I had to try it myself and after a bunch of games I was 1-6 with the deck and still not sure what to do. It was already 4h30 AM, just a few hours before the start of the PT that I decided to just play the Rw Aggro deck, same list as Megafone. We knew It wasn’t the best deck, but It was the best we had for us (?) as everything else failed on our hands.

This was the list I registered :

We wasted so much time in Standard that we couldn’t draft as much as we did in Seattle and not even time for one IRL draft as in San Diego. I Still thought I could reach a 4-2 with my experience in Oklahoma but we were far from perfect on that and I’d be drafting and playing without much sleep and also without any confidence nor a strong Standard deck.

Pro Tour Day 1
With a bit more than 2 hours of sleep, I didn’t wake up very well but tried to eat something, grab a Monster Energy Drink and I still needed to find a few cards for my deck.

* Draft

Eventhough my deck was good I came out of the draft thinking I could have done it even better. I tried to wheel a Pharika’s Mender and at least one Commune with Gods but none came back. The most interesting in this draft was receiving Arbor Colossus a Third Pick in the First Pack. The dude on my right opened Ashiok and wanted to stay UB and I’m not sure what the person 2 to my right opened to let it go.
I ended uo 3-0ing the table after beating buddy Brazilian João da Pochete on first round and then Brad Nelson on the second. I only lost one game with it! IT was the second time in my Maic career that I 3-0 a Draft (the first was on GP Sao Paulo 2012)!!

* Standard
This was my Standard results on Day 1 :

R4 : Junk Midrange 1-2
R5 : UW 2-1
R6 : Mono Blue Devotion 1-2
R7 : RG Devotion 2-0
R8 : GW 2-1
The Junk player was on his first airplane travel, destroyed me game 1 after I failed to find my 4th land for a few turns with two main deck Golgari Charms. In the third game All I Needed was either one of the White sideboard cards or the 4th land to kill his Loxodon Smiter enchanted with Unflinching Courage, but failed to do either of that. Both games I lost against Mono Blue were basicly the same “Do I have the Chained to the Rocks for his Master?”, I didn’t and lost. At least my white sideboard worked great against the GW Player but anyway I felt really underpowered on the day, even the UW deck had awesome anti-red tools on his sideboard and I was lucky to get out of that match with a win.
After all the despair I managed to finish the day at 6-2, my best day1 of my 7 Pro Tours! Only Edel (5-3) and Megafone (4-4) also made Day2 of the Brazilians.

* Pro Tour Day 2

* Draft
Now I had a great night of sleep and was feeling way better when I woke up! I needed 4 more wins to get in the money and that was my goal.

This was my second draft table :

I knew It was a very hard table and I even joked about It saying I’d snap take 4 points instead of having to draft and play in the table. As I didn’t have that choice I had to try my best to escape with some points from there.

I started the draft with a Reaper of the Wilds followed by the Mender, but green was gone and I started drafting a Aggressive RB deck. I wasn’t sure that was the right build for what I had but I tried to stay on the very aggressive plan. Opting for lower curve creatures and having Cavern Lampads to set one of the red creatures with Intimidate to finish the game.
Ended up losing all 3 rounds in 3 games against Jacob Van Lunen, Antoine Ruel and William Jensen. On round1 all the pros on the table got paired against the less known names and I was the only one to lose hehe… ! Van Lunen had a Spear of Heliod that was basicly unbeatable against me, he drew it 2 games and that’s it. Ruel had a GW deck full of Staunch-Hearted Warriors and I only had 1 removal that costed less than 4, he won the die roll and set it with a bunch of bestows before neither Lash of the Whip or Rage of Purphoros could do anything. I should have won against Jensen but I made two awful plays on the last turn of the game and even after he didn’t realizing the first, the second was more than enough to make me lose.
Yeah, I had my first 3-0 in the Pro Tour on the first day and the first 0-3 on the seond.

I decided to take a walk on the streets to get more calm and relaxed, ate something, drink a bunch of water and a Monster and was feeling better. I was in the same spot as I was in San Diego : Needing a 4-1 to get in the money!

* Standard

R12 : UWR Midrange (?) 1-2
R13 : Jund Midrange 1-2
Third game against UWR was anti-climactic. I had 2 Peak Eruption on my starting hand and my opponent got stuck with 2 lands for a turn but I failed to find a third land and after that he drew 2 lands in a row to cast Anger of Gods followed by a Master of Waves and I was done.
After 0-5ing day2 It was time to drop in a very sad way =( At least I could visit Guinness Storehouse on Sunday!

** Limited Season

I could only play 2 IRL PTQs, besides one Online PTQ.
I opened a very very bad pool on the online PTQ and even joked my only out on that PTQ was a Crash and indeed it crashed.

This was my pool on the IRL PTQ in Rio :

The pool was good but very hard to build. I stayed the whole time trying to figure the best way to build it and ended up with a BW with no splashes. Unfortunately I only 0-2 with it.

And this was my pool on the PTQ in my home town Sao Paulo :

The pool wasn’t very good and I tried to build a RB deck with more synergy with some sort of good early game and trying to close the games with the “combo” Purphoros + AKroan Horse. I probably should just have made a Polukranos+22filler.dec. Anyway I started 3-0 in the PTQ but lost 2 in a row against way better decks and finished 5-2. That was my last shot at qualifying for Pro Tour Valencia. This also ended up my year with 0 Top8s in IRL PTQs. At least I had one in a WMCQ and the online Top8 in a Modern PTQ in January.

** MOCS Seasons 9-12 and Player of the Year
I couldn’t get pass Season 9 Preliminaries and didn’t even play those in Season 10, as the Season Finale would be on the same weekend as PT Dublin.
I was 4 QPs short of playing in the Season 11 Finale and the Preliminaries were on the same weekend as GP Santiago.
And Season 12? Well, I had the 35 QPs for it but It was exactly during MTGO’s Dark era, without Scheduled Events. Anyway Season 12’s Finale is schedule to happen now in 2014.
The POTY MOCS was on the same day of a IRL Standard PTQ for Atlanta in Rio. I brought my laptop with me, in case I didn’t do well in the PTQ I could play the MOCS. I was feeling very confident on my deck choice for the tournament but went 1-2 with it after being paired against 3 matchups I wasn’t exactly expecting (Naya Control, Jund Midrange and BAnt Fog). Now IT was time to enter Despair Mode to find a Internet to play in the MOCS! Ended up going 5-2 in the MOCS, good enough only for a Top32 very far from the Top8.

** GP Santiago

My 5th and Last GP of 2013 would be here in South America. I was (and still am) on the quest to get in the money of a GP outside of Brazil and the format in Santiago would be the same as PT Theros, so I had a head start on it.
I started trying again Edel’s Bg Midrange deck but I failed. After that I tried both decks that came out strong of the PT : Mono Black Devotion and Mono Blue Devotion, but failed with those as well.
So I had to find something different to play and started playint this take on Yasooka’s UB Deck from the PT, with some modifications made by Juliano Gennari :

It was more agressive than the original.

Besides it I tried to play this version of Rw Devotion with tweaks from Edel and L1X0 :

It was basicly a Rw deck less based on the god draws as we don’t have any Burning-Tree Emissaries and only 1 Nykthos, but that let us use couple Mutavaults as lands.
I had reasonable sucess with both and opted for the UB deck as I thought the rogue factor would be bigger and help me out in the tournament and I was being paired against more relevant matchups while playing it. I knew I’d either Top16 or bust with the deck and while still trying to get in the money outside of Brazil, I also wanted to qualify for the next Pro Tour.
In the end, Me, Juliano and Bolov0 played the same 75 cards and the three of us got knocked out in the last round of day 2. With a combine record of 18-9 (6-3 each, counting the byes) we coulnd’t even play in the day2. All wasn’t lost in the weekend though as I was called again to the feature match area and there was even an interview with me :

I only think they should change “South American” to “Brazilian” as I still coulnd’t score even a Top64 while playing abroad.
Another thing to remember from this GP was our reckless search for Sensory Deprivations as NO ONE had any of them around. It took us hours and hours of searching buddy Alonso’s cards until late night he got a new box full of M14 cards and we finally found a bunch of Deprivations =) It was an awesome team work! Thanks Alonso, Megafone, Batutinha and Izuke =D
This was the only GP I didn’t day2 in 2013 and the only GP I got prizes was GP Rio. I guess I can’t complain!! =D
I also want to thank again both Alonso and Pintacso for hosting me, Megafone, Izuke and Batutinha in Santiago! You guys made it so much easier for us and I’m grateful for that! If you guys need anything in Sao Paulo, just let me know =D Also MBC’s websites to find cheap plane tickets with buddy Enzo finding out the 50 USDs roundtrip travel made it possible for me to make the trip =)
I hope to come back to Santiago again now in 2014 for the GP and I’ll try to stay few more days in town to explore the city. I don’t regret not having much time to sightseeing in my trips as the main focus was always the tournament. But who knows what will happen next time?

* Dark Days for MTGO Players
TO end my year, I was forced to take a month break from MTGO while Schedule Events were off. As I wrote in the Limited Season, a bunch of PTQs crashed during that time and after the same happened to Season 11 MOCS, the heads of MTGO decided to take the game off air for a while.

** Conclusion and Let’s go 2014
We’re already on first season of 2014 with the Standard PTQs for Atlanta. I even said I played one in Rio (and quickly 1-2 it). At least we have MTGO back know and we’re also going to have the MOCS from Season 12 of 2013 as the Season 1 of 2014!!
Eventhough the year didn’t end so well for me I can’t really complain. The beginning of the year was so awesome, I played in 2 PTs, Won a GP, end Season 12/13 of the PPC with 21 PPs, which were good enough to get me to Silver level.
I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever get a season as good as that and all I can do is to be grateful it happened =)
I also met a bunch of nice people IRL and got closer to some others during the year. Every trip will be remembered with great fondness =D

I’m not sure how my 2014 will be, I still haven’t decided If I’m going to travel and play as many PTQs as possible or just not travel at all for them. After all I’m turning 30 in May and It might be time to move on.
I want to thank again all my friends that helped me, supported me and borrowed me cards and were always by my side, you guys will always be on my heart. And if there’s someone cheering against me, I want to send you a hug and that God bless us all.
I still need to get my Limited better specially as we’re having 2 Limited PTQs Seasons in the year and I’ll need to try way harder If I wanna remain competitive. If I opt to play more PTQs (as 4/5 aren’t a lot), I want to qualify again for the Pro Tour and that I get to the money again as I need nice showing to erase my bad day2 of Dublin. And If I can choose a tournament to play, I hope it’s the World Magic Cup!!
And specially that the Brazilians (and also our fellows South Americans) get back to shine in the Pro TOu and Brazil to win the Magic Cup and the GPs around here!

Vou fazer uma retrospectiva do meu 2013, com resumos de todos os eventos relevantes que joguei e irei falar um pouco mais do Pro Tour Theros (Dublin), já que não fiz report dele.

Como podem ver na minha retrospectiva de 2012 (Minha Retrospectiva de 2012 (Inglês)), meu ano acabou bem complicado porém comecei dando a volta por cima já em Janeiro.

*** Primeira Temporada

** Season Modern

Modern é o formato em que eu tenho mais conhecimento e experiência, apesar de não ser o que mais jogo atualmente. Pude jogar 3 PTQs Online nesta season :

– 25/12/12 : 5-4
– 05/01/13 : 1-3 drop
– 12/01/13 : 8-1 no Suiço e derrota no Top8

Joguei de Jund em todos eles e nos torneios de Janeiro eu tive o privilégio de jogar com listas diretamente tunadas pelo maior craque do Modern Mundial : Willy Edel

Fui mal no primeiro PTQ de Janeiro mas a lista dele acabou vencendo o torneio e o PTQ do dia 12 marcou o dia em que voltei a fazer um bom resultado. Foi frustrante perder no Top8, ainda mais contra um adversário que eu tinha vencido no suiço e um match que eu me considerava favorito mas já foi gratificante se sentir competitivo novamente.

O Problema da temporada Modern era que eu não tinha acesso as cartas nem IRL e nem no MTGO então eu simplesmente não pude mais jogar nenhum PTQ.

** MOCS Seasons 1 até 4

A primeira temporada do ano foi a mais movimentada já que a Promo do mês era Force of Will (a carta mais cara do MTGO). Apesar de ter conseguido vaga para jogar as Preliminares eu não tinha um deck Legacy então fiquei de fora.

Na segunda temporada eu pude entrar em uma Preliminar jogando de Naya Humans, deck que foi utilizado pela maioria dos Braileiros no PT Montreal :

Eu não gostava do meu matchup somente contra Rg Aggro e após perder para 2 deles estava eliminado.

Na season 3,que era Selado de RTR/GTC, eu também parei na Preliminar com um 2-2 e na Season 4 acabei nem jogando.

**GP Rio de Janeiro

Aqui o ponto principal do começo do ano. O tão esperado GP no nosso pais.

O desespero aqui foi enorme, contando com os planos iniciais de uma casa de treino indo para os ares após meu carro ser roubado e em seguida por um erro dos correios eu fiquei sem deck para jogar o PTQ Modern que seria realizado na semana anterior ao GP no mesmo Rio de Janeiro. Eu realmente cogitei por alguns momentos nem comparecer ao GP mas no fim tudo na base da magia e desespero acabou se juntando até o fato de eu por algum motivo achar que não consegueria fechar o Naya Midrange que eu estava treinando nas últimas semanas para embarcar na véspera no Aristocrats do Rorix e do Shooter. Com toda essa magia veio o Trial e em seguida o GP.

Novamente agradeço a todos que participaram e comemoraram comigo! Sei que muitos vão se lembrar do GP Rio de 2013 por causa do calor excessivo, ou dos problemas alheios da região mas vai demorar para eu achar (se é que vou achar) um torneio tão especial para mim como este.

Com os 8 Pontos do GP Rio eu chegava a 16 Pro Points na temporada (Tutu s2) e com isso eu tinha uma chance (mesmo que remota) de alcançar o Gold em San Diego (precisava deu um Top16). Eu já estava muito feliz só de chegar lá nessa situação e com o Silver alcançado eu teria Bye2 por mais de um ano (até Agosto de 2014) o que é bem difícil de se conseguir com a quantidade de torneios que jogo IRL.

*** Segunda Temporada

Logo em Abril tivemos as notícias sobre as mudanças no Pro Player’s Club e com o meu recente Status alcançado eu teria vaga para o próximo Pro Tour em que eu estivesse sem vaga. Ou seja, eu poderia ainda jogar os PTQs para Dublin e caso vencesse um, passaria a vaga para Valencia e assim por diante! Mesmo sendo um invite sem a passagem eu fiquei muito contente em garantir já mais um Pro Tour antes mesmo de jogar San Diego.

** Season Standard

Era Aristocrats

Com os PTQs para Dublin e o WMCQ para Amsterdam sendo Standard, eu começaria a Season já tendo um deck definido. Sim, eu iria jogar de Aristocrats até rotacionar o formato. Meus resultados:

– WMCQ São Paulo : 7-0-2 no Suiço, derrota no Top8
– PTQ São Paulo : 5-3, após perder a possível win-id no Round 7
– PTQ Rio de Janeiro : 1-4

/Utilizei algo bem próximo disso nestes eventos, sei que tinha um Dead Weight em algum lugar e com certeza tinha tanto o Boros Charm como o Return no WMCQ Paulistano, provavelmente só o Boros Charm, se tanto, nos outros

Ao abrir 7-0 no WMCQ Paulistano eu chegava à incrível marca de 20-3 jogando de Aristocrats! Com uma premiação de 130 Boosters para o primeiro colocado do suiço eu cogitei nem dar ID. Porém é melhor garantir o ID e o Top8 na oitava rodada e ver o que aconteceria na nona. De qualquer forma, mesmo com um segundo ID passei em primeiro e apesar de ter perdido no Top8 após uma porção de mulligans eu não posso reclamar de sair do torneio com tantos boosters! Infelizmente era a única chance que eu teria de jogar um WMCQ nesta temporada e o sonho de jogar na seleção brasileira teria que ser adiado. Eu já com a viagem de San Diego marcada e possivelmente Dublin eu não poderia me dar ao luxo de viajar para todos PTQs nacionais.

De Interessante no PTQ Carioca o baixo número de jogadores, desde 2001 eu não jogava um PTQ de 6 rodadas e mesmo assim após abrir 1-0 eu perdi 4 seguidas, sim, eu não dropei, tentei recuperar minha honra após o 1-2 e me afundei mais ainda 😦

Final da Season

Após voltar da viagem de San Diego ainda joguei 3 PTQs Online :

– Standard de Naya Midrange : 1-2 Drop
– Standard de Jund : 6-3, 33º Lugar
– Selado de Modern Masters : 2-2 Drop

Com o Aristocrats sem força alguma após a entrada de Dragon’s Maze me aventurei com outros decks em 2 PTQs Online mas sem sucesso. Cheguei a estar 6-1 após abrir 0-1 de Jund mas perdi as partidas decisivas e acabei fora até do Top32.

Acabamos com o desfalque do Pedro ‘Rorix’ Carvalho na semana anterior à viagem 😦 *pelos motivos que todos já sabem*

Eu resolvi fazer uma viagem de 3 semanas aproveitando o GP da semana anterior e o da semana posterior ao Pro Tour

* GP Portland

Apenas o parceiro Tutuzim não fez essa perna da viagem! Todos que compareceram optaram pelo simples : Jogar com o mesmo deck da Temporada Modern que havia acabado a menos de 2 meses atrás. Esse era o problema de ter um GP Constructed em um formato diferente uma semana antes do Pro Tour. Ninguém treinando para o Pro Tour teria tempo para fazer algo muito diferente.

Eu e o Edel jogamos com a seguinte lista :

Posso dizer que foi a única vez em que um dos gênios do Modern não foi perfeito ao prever o metagame e eu boto toda a culpa disso no fato de todos estarmos mais preocupados em jogar Block e Draft. A sacada de usar Blood Baron of Vizkopa no Modern eu achei genial, não era o momento mas quem sabe jajá é a hora?

Eu tinha 2 byes para o torneio, isso somente por que eu ganhei o GP Rio, se eu tivesse uma vitória a menos durante o final de semana eu teria apenas um bye. O que mostra talvez alguma falha no sistema de Byes por Planeswalker Poins/Pro Points? Vencer um GP não é o suficiente para se ter 3 Byes em seu próximo GP mas vencer um PTQ te deixa na beira do terceiro bye já com dois garantidos?

Enfim, eu consegui fechar o primeiro dia com um 7-2 após enfrentar uma sequência de matchups complicados. Achei que joguei muito bem durante o dia e estava contente em passar para o day 2. Apenas o Obama também passou.

Já no segundo dia o meu jogo caiu e muito. Fiz 1-3 e estava eliminado pela disputa do dinheiro mas não era hora de se lamentar e voltar a pensar no Block e no Draft do Pro Tour.

Uma pena jogar um GP em um dos meus formatos favoritos sem poder estar devidamente treinado e focado. Espero uma nova oportunidade de jogar um GP Modern.

** PARTIU SAN DIEGO

A gente ficou hospedado ao lado do local do Evento em um excelente hotel! Repletos de Baldes de Prata para levar gelo, lustres e tudo mais. O que facilitou nossas discussões e jogos de Block foi o fato de estarmos todos no mesmo hotel e nos dias em que o Obama e o Celsão estavam em outro local, eles passavam o dia INTEIRO ao nosso lado.

Foi difícil achar algo e após muitos jogos no Magic Online e tentar as mais diversas listas o parceiro Edel mandou mais de umas suas genialidades para dois 4-0s Seguidos em Daily Events e com esta lista todos nós, menos o Enzo que jogou de Esper, jogamos :

A gente considerava que Esper era o melhor deck do formato seguido pelo Mono Red e que ambos seriam os decks mais jogados.

O que aconteceu foi que Esper foi muito mais jogado do que a gente esperava e outros decks de Revelation logo atrás com o Mono Red sendo bem menos jogado.

Eu não me sentia nada confortável com o draft. Eu tentei diversos drafts na casa mas não consegui obter sucesso algum e estava totalmente perdido no formato.

Consegui um 3-3 no Draft. 2-1 no meu primeiro Draft que era “OK” se a manabase funcionasse e um 1-2 no segundo que era uma pilha de cartas. Em Seattle eu sai decepcionado com um 3-3 por que eu estava draftando bem o formato, já em San Diego eu sai aliviado com o 3-3 já que podia ter sido muito pior.

Com o 7-3 no Bloco e o 3-3 no Draft eu consegui pela primeira vez fechar um Pro Tour no money. Mesmo tendo passado longe do Top16 que me levaria ao Gold, eu fiquei muito feliz de ter premiado no Pro Tour. A parte negativa foi mais ninguém da galera ter premiado. Apenas 3 de nós fizemos day2.

*GP Guadalajara

Apenas o Edel do Team roUrix iria para Guadalajara, aonde iriamos nos juntar ao PV e ao Surreal Mister Ferry. Quase nenhum Pro Player fez viagem e salvo algum engano tivemos ZERO americanos em Guadalajara.

Após tentar fazer o velho Aristocrats funcionar e falhar e sem a confiança de jogar de Auras (lista seria a mesma que o PV utilizou), resolvi usar a mesma estratégia e ir de #Edelgenius

De acordo com os scouts, os decks mais jogados seriam : Mono Red Aggro, Jund Midrange e Junk Reanimator. E enfrentei estes decks em 10 das 12 rodadas mas mesmo assim falhei ao chegar ao menos no money. Eu podia até empatar na última rodada mas o emparceiramento não foi feito no sistema 1×2, 3×4, 5×6 …. e acabei sendo emparcerado com um dos dois jogadores, dentre 12, que não podiam empatar. O mesmo bug foi o que permitiu que o Edel ganhasse tantas posições e entrasse no Top8, então é isso ae!

** MOCS Seasons 5 até 8

Acabei nem jogando as Preliminares das Seasons 5 e 6.

Já na Season 7 já me valendo dos 10 pontos adicionais por ser Silver, eu me classifiquei diretamente para a final que era Selado do Bloco completo de Return to Ravnica! Porém meu selado era péssimo e optei por dropar sem nem ter jogado, já que tinha um aniversário de um grande amigo para ir.

A Season 8 era Modern e eu novamente me classifiquei direto para a final. Joguei de BG Midrange sem splashes, que era a nova sensação entre as variantes de “Jund”, comecei 0-1 e cheguei a estar 4-1 até perder de virada para o eventual campeão do torneio, prolepsis, jogando de Melira, que sempre foi e sempre será meu nêmesis do formato enquanto eu jogar de BGx Midrange. Acabei com um 5-3 que me colocou apenas no Top64 dentre 204 jogadores devido aos meus péssimos milésimos.

*** Terceira Temporada

Chegamos agora para a temporada que é sempre a mais tenebrosa para mim.

Para começar o desespero era hora de se despedir da minha carta mais querida : Falkenrath Aristocrat

Joguei dois torneios Standard em setembro e o que joguei com a Falkenrath acabei vencendo levando um playmat e duas Booster Box de Dragon’s Maze com essa beleza aqui :

Até demorei muito para voltar ao bonde do Aristocrats após o lançamento do Xathrid Necromancer mas pude aproveitar um bocado no MTGO, que seria a melhor parte do meu segundo semestre.

** Pro Tour Theros em Dublin

Após muito procurar e considerar o que fazer, resolvi comprar a passagem e ir jogar o Pro Tour. Eu sabia que seria caro mas eu não queria desperdiçar uma chance de jogar o Pro Tour, a gente nunca sabe quando irá jogar outro.

Resolvi também aproveitar e jogar o GP Oklahoma City na semana anterior ao PT. Eu sei que muitos poderiam considerar que jogar o GP atrapalha nos treinamentos mas nesse caso ao contrário de Portland, antes do Pro Tour San Diego, que foi Modern e nada a ver com o Pro Tour, a gente teria um GP Limited no mesmo formato do Pro Tour. Antes do Pro Tour Seattle eu senti que o GP San Jose, mesmo sendo trios, me ajudou muito a entender o Limited da edição e eu estava procurando por toda ajuda que pudesse encontrar para obter um bom resultado em Dublin.

* GP Oklahoma City

Nesta viagem apenas o Edel dentre os classificados ao Pro Tour iria também e teriamos a companhia do Surreal Mister Ferry.

Os dias que se antecederam ao GP foram bem corridos com muito treino no Standard com o Edel e o Rorix, porém sem ter alguma conclusão muito forte a não ser esperar e ver o que aconteceria no segundo SCG Open no formato.

Já no Limited antes do GP eu tinha apenas 2 Selados (um no Pre-Release) e um Draft. Esse foi meu selado no torneio :

Apesar de não ter muita expectativa e enfrentar 4 adversários com Elspeth, 3 com Dragões e afins, acabei 7-2 após 2 byes. De muito legal o fato de eu ser chamado duas vezes ao feature match, uma delas no video quando fui destruido rapidamente contra o Shuhei Nakamura e depois quando venci o Brock Parker.

Eu iria precisar de um 4-2 ou talvez um 3-2-1 no segundo dia para chegar ao dinheiro e este foi meu primeiro draft :

Eu achei que podia fazer um 2-1 tranquilo com este draft mas acabei perdendo para um oponente que tinha Reaper of the Wilds, Whip of Erebos e Xenagos mas não para nenhuma das raras e sim para o topdeck de Mogis Marauder nos dois games que perdi e em seguida perdi para um GW muito agressivo que não me deixou entrar no jogo.

Abrindo 1-2 eu sabia que provavelmente iria precisar de um 3-0 no segundo draft, algo que eu só fiz UMA vez na minha vida, então acabei draftando essa pilha :

Ainda montei errado e pós-side eu estava tirando esse splash sem sentido. Consegui ganhar os dois primeiros rounds de forma bem suada, sempre 2-1 no desespero e ainda estava em condição de empatar na última rodada, meu oponente também poderia empatar mas ele declinou minha oferta e quis jogar. Acabei perdendo de 2 a 1 após perder por 2 turnos o land drop da vitória (era o oitavo land para um Boulderfall). Pela segunda vez consecutiva em 2013 eu estava por 1 ponto da premiação mas meus oponentes não quiseram o empate e eu fiquei fora do money.

Apesar de sair sem o resultado eu já me sentia mais confortável com o Draft de Theros e foi legal ter aparecido no coverage em um GP Americano. Voltando pouco tempo atrás, apesar de estar sempre próximo do topo no GP São Paulo de 2012, eu só fui parar no feature nas últimas rodadas e inclusive quando citavam os jogadores brigando pelo Top8 eles diziam que não havia ninguém com Top8 de GP, ignorando meu Top8 antigo de Curitiba. Então aparecer no feature foi bem positivo para mim e me dava moral principalmente uma vitória.

O primeiro impacto ao chegar na Irlanda foi o funcionário da Alfândega dizer que era jogador de Magic e dizer que tinha intenção de comparar ao Pro Tour para assistir! Em seguida o bom taxista com seu sotaque MUITO carregado que era bem difícil de se entender.

Na logística a gente ia ter um problema dessa vez, apesar do resto da galera estar a pouco mais de 1 quilômetro do hotel em que Eu, Rorix e Edel iriamos ficar, o frio dificultava a locomoção e a gente basicamente não teve muita conversa ou treino junto.

Desespero da véspera, o que fazer nesse Standard?

Seguimos tentando as mais diversas estratégias. O deck que a gente mais tinha trabalhado era um Rw Aggro, só que a gente sabia que ele não era muito bom. As tentativas de Naya e Junk Midrange também fracassaram e a gente estava sem rumo. Chegamos a trabalhar bastante em listas de Green Aggro, com Boon Satyr, Polukranos e amigos, com ou sem algum splash mas também não conseguimos chegar em nada que a gente se sentisse confortável.

Na véspera do Pro Tour muitos dos classificados estavam com suas contas falsas jogando as mais diversas queues no Magic Online, então o Mono Blue Devotion não era uma novidade para nós e enfrentamos e até tentarmos fazer funcionar o RB Aggro que o time do Ari LAx jogou. Mas nos faltava tempo e mais braços para tentar as mais diversas alternativas.
*S2 Jonais e Enzo que emprestaram mtas cartas!

Acabamos tirando NENHUM momento para passear pela cidade, era o tempo todo jogando e o deck que eu mais conseguia vitórias no treino era um Esper Control, lista parecida com a que o Calcano utilizou para fazer Top8 no primeiro SCG Open do formato mas a gente sabia que não tinhamos condições nem de jogar o PT com ela e muito menos montar uma lista boa do deck. Mais desespero ainda é que eu iria precisar correr atrás de cartas para jogar.

Na véspera do torneio o Edel teve mais uma idéia genial, Bg Midrange, ele rapidamente fez X-0 com a lista no MTGO e estava decidido. Eu tentei jogar com a lista, parecia ótima, por que não tentar? Após sair 1-6 das queues eu estava novamente perdido e as 4h30 da manhã, véspera do Pro Tour eu decidi ir com a mesma lista do Rorix, que a gente sabia que não era o melhor que a gente podia montar, mas todo o resto falhou miseravelmente em nossas mãos.

Registrei a seguinte lista :

*Sim, eu bani o deck de minha memória

Com tanto tempo gasto no Standard a gente não pode fazer nem de perto a quantidade de drafts que a gente fez em Seattle e dessa vez sem nem um draft ao vivo como em San Diego. Mesmo assim eu achei que tinha algum entendimento do formato e poderia tentar passar do meu 3-3 padrão e alcançar um 4-2, o problema seria fechar as vitórias sem sono, confiança e sem um deck forte.

Pro Tour Day 1

Com pouco mais de 2 horas de sono, acordei não me sentindo muito bem, tentei comer algo, um Monster e eu ainda precisava correr atrás de cartas.

* Draft

Meu deck ficou bom mas eu sai do draft achando que eu poderia ter feito melhor ainda já que eu achei que poderia pegar na volta um Pharika’s Mender e um dos dois Commune with Gods. De interessante este Arbor Colossus foi meu TERCEIRO pick do PRIMEIRO Booster. O rapaz na minha direita abriu um Ashiok e não quis pegar o Colossus, agora eu não sei o que que foi pego em cima do Colossus pelo cidadão que estava a dois posições na minha direita (o mesmo ao chegar na mesa não havia entregue sua lista nem se quer escrito ela, pois não sabia que era preciso entregar no primeiro round!)

Acabei fechando a mesa enfrentando o compatriota João da Pochete na primeira rodada e o Brad Nelson na segunda. Acabei perdendo só um game, o que eu floodei, com o deck e de tanto desespero eu emergia do Draft com um 3-0. Apenas a segunda vez que fecho uma mesa de draft e a primeira vez no Pro Tour.

* Standard

Após o Draft estes foram meus resultados no Standard :

R4 : Junk Midrange 1-2
R5 : UW 2-1
R6 : Mono Blue Devotion 1-2
R7 : RG Devotion 2-0
R8 : GW 2-1

O parceiro de Junk, em sua primeira viagem de avião, me derrotou no primeiro game após eu travar em terrenos e eu tomar dois Golgari Charms no primeiro game! No jogo final eu precisava de um quarto terreno ou de uma das minhas cartas brancas do side que eliminariam o Loxodon Smiter dele com Unflinching Courage. Mas não deu. Os dois games que perdi para o Mono Blue estavam nas mãos de “Eu tenho Chained to the Rocks para o Master dele?”, eu não tinha e perdi. Por outro lado meu side fantástico rodou muito bem e eu venci de virada o GW. No mais eu me senti muito underpowered, o UW mesmo tinha um side tão forte contra Vermelho que ainda não sei como escapei da partida com a vitória.

Após todo desespero fechei o dia 6-2, minha melhor marca em um primeiro dia de Pro Tour. Apenas o Edel (5-3) e o Rorix (4-4) também passram ao Day 2.

* Pro Tour Day 2

* Draft

Devidamente alimentado e com mais de oito horas de sono, eu sabia que precisava de pelo menos mais 4 vitórias para entra no Money e este era o objetivo!

Esta minha mesa do segundo draft :

Essa mesa era bem difícil e eu até brinquei que se me oferecessem 4 pontos para eu nem jogar o draft eu aceitaria instantaneamente. Porém sem essa opção eu ia ter que fazer meu melhor para escapar com alguns pontos dali.

Este foi meu draft :

Comecei o draft com Reaper of the Wilds e Pharika’s Mender, mas o verde sumiu e eu parti para um BR Agressivo, não tinha a convicção de estar montando corretamente mas eu tentei ser bem agressivo na build, por isso optando por drops mais baixos e tentar finalizar com alguma criatura vermelha com um Cavern Lampad.

Eu acabei perdendo as 3 rodadas de 2 a 1 para Jacob Van Lunen, Antoine Ruel e William Jensen. O Van Lunen tinha um Spear of Heliod que eu não tinha como derrotar, ele castou o Spear em dois dos três jogos e é isso. O Ruel tinha um deck repleto de Staunch-Hearted Warriors e eu só com uma remoção que custasse menos do que 5. Perdi no dado e em dois jogos ele estava com o Warrior cheio de marcadores quando desvirei com minhas remoções de 5 manas na mão. Agora contra o Jensen eu deveria ter ganho, eu tinha a vitória certa no terceiro game, mas cometi um erro, ele devolveu o erro e eu cravei mais um e acabei perdendo uma partida ganha, tudo isso em um turno.

Se no dia anterior tive meu primeiro 3-0, foi a vez de ter meu primeiro 0-3 em um draft.

Dei uma volta pela rua, passei na lojinha, comi, tomei água, tomei um Monster e tentei relaxar. Um 4-1 no Standard me botaria no dinheiro, mesma situação de San Diego!

* Standard

R12 : UWR Midrange (?) 1-2
R13 : Jund Midrange 1-2

O terceiro game contra o UWR foi bem chato, eu tinha 2 Peak Eruption em minha mão e meu oponente travou em 2 terrenos por um turno mas eu mesmo keepando 2 lands não tive o terceiro terreno e ele comprou o terceiro terreno e com a sequência de Anger of the Gods (após 2 Frostburn Weird) e Master of the Waves me tiraram da partida.

Já eliminado era hora de dropar, uma forma triste de fechar o Pro Tour com um 0-5 no segundo dia 😦 no dia seguinte pude ao menos conhecer a fábrica da Guinness.

** Season Limited

Pude jogar apenas 2 PTQs IRL : São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro. Além de 3 PTQs Online!

Eu não abri nenhuma pool boa em nenhum dos PTQs Online e algo que eles tinham em comum? Todos deram crash quando eu já estava bem eliminado.

Esta era minha pool do PTQ Carioca :

A pool era boa mas muito difícil de montar. Passei todo tempo permitido tentando as mais diversas combinações e acabei optando por um BW sem splashes. Infelizmente não passei de um 0-2.

E esta foi a minha pool do PTQ Paulistano :

Esta já não era uma pool boa. Eu tentei fazer um RB mais sinérgico, tentar ter um bom early game e fechar com o “combo” Purphoros + Akroan Horse. Mas provavelmente eu devia ter feito um Polukranos+22nadas.dec. Ainda assim eu abri 3-0, perdi duas seguidas mas fechei 5-2. E aqui se encerrava minhas chances de chegar ao Pro Tour Valencia. Isso também encerrou meu ano sem nenhum Top8 em PTQ IRL, apenas com o Top8 do PTQ Modern de Janeiro no MTGO salvando.

** MOCS Seasons 9 até 12 e Player of the Year

Eu não consegui passar das Preliminares da Season 9 e nem se quer joguei elas na Season 10 já que a Final seria no mesmo dia do PT Dublin.

Acabei ficando de fora da Season 11 por 4 QPs e sem poder jogar as Preliminares já que seriam no no mesmo final de semana do GP Santiago.

E a Season 12? Bom, nessa eu tinha meus 35 QPs mas foi justamente nessa season que aconteceu a fase negra do Magic Online, sem Daily nem Premier Evens. A Final da Season 12 ainda vai rolar, agora já em 2014.

O MOCS do Player of the Year foi no mesmo final de semana do PTQ Carioca já para Atlanta. Eu levei meu notebook para o caso de ir mal no PTQ IRL poder jogar de lá. Eu até estava bem confiante em meu deck mas não passei de um 1-2 no PTQ após enfrentar 3 matchups que não esperava (Naya Control, Jund Midrange e Bant Fog) e parti para o desespero da Internet para jogar o MOCS. Após muito sufoco eu fechei 5-2, o suficiente para um Top32 mas bem longe do Top8.

*Os 4 Mutavaults não aparecem na screen

** GP Santiago

Meu quinto e último GP no ano seria aqui na América do Sul. Eu ainda estava (e estou por acaso) na missão de premiar em um GP fora do Brasil e o fato do formato ser o mesmo do Pro Tour Dublin seria de grande ajuda.

Eu comecei tentando novamente o Bg Midrange do Edel mas fracassei. Em seguida fui testando os decks que sairam mais fortes do Pro Tour : Mono Black Devotion e Mono Blue Devotion mas acabei falhando miseravelmente com ambos.

Na tentativa de achar algo diferente passei a jogar com a versão de UB Control, baseada no UB que o Shouta Yasooka utilizou no Pro Tour com as atualizações do Juliano Gennari :

Sendo uma lista bem mais para frente do que a original.

Além dele eu comecei a tentar o Rw Devotion versão adaptada do L1X0 e do Edel :

Que era basicamente uma versão de Rw Devotion sem o foco nas “god draws” já que não temos Burning-Tree Emissary na lista e apenas 1 Nykthos, com 2 Mutavaults como terrenos.

Eu tive um sucesso razoável com ambos, premiando basicamente em todos eventos que joguei então optei pelo UB já que eu acreditei em um fator rogue maior para me dar vantagem e achei que estava enfrentando mais matchups relevantes quando jogava com ele do que com o Rw.

No fim Eu, Juliano e Bolovo, jogando com as mesmas 75, não passamos de um 6-3. Todos nós perdemos valendo o day2 mas não posso dizer que tudo foi negativo no GP. Eu apareci novamente no feature match e tive até uma matéria comigo :

Só acho que deviam trocar o “South American” para Brasil já que eu não consigo ir bem quando saio do pais =( Basicamente o Corinthians dos anos 2000 (bom, o Corinthians quebrou a maldição recentemente, quem sabe eu não tenho sucesso também em um futuro próximo???).

Algo marcante deste GP foi a busca incessante na véspera pelos Sensory Deprivation que NINGUÉM tinha e a gente não achava nem por decreto. Isso até de madrugada quando o parceiro Alonso surgiu com mais uma caixa de cartas e a gente encontrou todos Deprivations do mundo 🙂 A gente já tinha revistado mais de 14 caixas achando as mais diversas Raras e Mythics e nada desta comum hehe Foi um excelente trabalho em equipe!

Este foi o único GP no ano em que eu não fiz day2, sendo que o GP Rio foi o único que premiei. É, eu não tenho do que reclamar 😀

Devo agradecer e muito aos parceiros Alonso e Pintacso pela hospedagem em Santiago, facilitaram e muito tanto para mim como para o Rorix, Batutinha e Izuke! E claro, sem os bons sites do MBC e a promoção relâmpago de 50 Dólares ida/volta que o parceiro Enzo achou, eu nem se quer teria viajado 🙂

Espero voltar para Santiago no próximo GP e dessa vez vou tentar ficar uns dias a mais para poder passear. Eu não me arrependo de não ter passeado tanto em minhas viagens, já que meu foco antes do torneio sempre é o torneio! Quem sabe na próxima?

* Dias Negros do MTGO

Para finalizar meu ano, fui forçado a ficar um mês sem Magic Online no periodo em que os Eventos estavam fora do ar. Como citei na temporada dos PTQs Limited, muitos PTQs acabaram crashando e após um MOCS passar pelo mesmo destino os manda-chuvas do jogo acabaram optando por “tirar o jogo do ar” por uns tempos.

** Conclusão e bora 2014

Já estamos a todo vapor na Season de PTQs Standard para Atlanta, inclusive já citei que joguei, e fui mal, no PTQ Carioca. Ao menos tivemos a volta dos torneios do Magic Online e tanto o MOCS da Season 12 de 2013 como da 1 de 2014 vão acontecer com atraso mas vão!

O ano pode ter terminado de forma melancólica porém eu não posso reclamar. Eu tive um ano fantástico, joguei 2 Pro Tours, venci um GP, terminei a season 12/13 do Pro Player’s Club com 21 QPs que me renderam o Silver level.

Eu sinceramente não sei se um dia vou conseguir chegar perto de fazer uma temporada tão boa e eu só posso agradecer por isso.

Também conheci ao vivo pessoas fantásticas e me aproximei de outras durante o ano. Todas viagens vão ser lembradas com carinho na memória.

Não sei como vai ser meu 2014 agora, ainda preciso me decidir entre viajar para todos PTQs ou começar a deixar o competitivo mais de lado, afinal eu completo 30 anos em Maio e talvez seja a hora de partir para outra.

Agradeço a todos meus amigos que me apoiaram, ajudaram, emprestaram cartas e estiveram do meu lado, vocês sim vão ser sempre lembrados com muito carinho. E se existir alguém que esteja torcendo contra, um abraço para vocês também, que Deus abençoe a todos nós.

Sigo precisando melhorar meu Limited e agora que temos duas Seasons Limited no ano eu vou precisar me esforçar mais se eu pretendo me manter ao menos competitivo. Se eu optar por jogar mais PTQs (apenas 4 em um ano é pouco, mesmo considerando que eu não podia jogar o PTQ Modern Paulista, 5 não é muito), que eu consiga me classificar novamente ao Pro Tour e que se eu chegar, tudo que eu quero é voltar ao Money, ter uma atuação de respeito e me recuperar do meu péssimo dia 2 em Dublin. Se pudesse escolher um torneio para jogar, que seja o World Magic Cup!

E o principal, que o Brasil volte a brilhar no Pro Tour, que o Brasil ganhe a Magic Cup e todos GPs por aqui 🙂

O Último Desespero?

Eu escrevi este texto no meio de Setembro (duas semanas após o torneio) mas como ele acabou não sendo publicado, resolvi postar agora para a galera.

É uma história padrão de Zé Dantas, repleta de Desespero, side-stories e nesse caso sucesso no fim 😀 Mal pelo português por que no fim, o texto acabou nem sendo editado.

Esta foi a despedida da minha carta mais querida de todos os tempos : Falkenrath Aristocrat

Espero que quem ler se divirta, apesar do formato já ter desaparecido e o torneio se passado a mais de 2 meses.

Olá galera do desespero!

Estou de volta para lhes contar mais uma história de um torneio, na verdade dois deles, ambos no formato Standard.

Desde que foi anunciado um final de semana com dois torneios Standard e dois Legacy nas lojas Magic Domain e Mundo Kinoene, eu comecei a combinar com o parceiro Fernando Freitas para ele vir e ficar em casa, no caso a gente jogaria ambos Standard já que era o formato em que ambos estávamos mais acostumados e com premiações mais atraentes. No sábado o campeão ganharia uma passagem para o Grand Prix Santiago (que será realizado em Novembro) e no domingo o torneio promocional do vigésimo aniversário do Magic, dando 20 boxes de premiação.

Eu ainda tinha um problema a resolver, que era o fato de eu não ter me inscrito para o torneio de domingo, correndo risco dele lotar, porém por sorte o parceiro Thiago Lucena tinha um convite sobrando e pode repassar para mim (<3)

*** O Standard com Magic 2014

Começarei com um breve /mimimi….

Todos temos aquele mês no ano em que as coisas costumam não funcionar, e se eu tenho esse mês, ele é Agosto. Para competir com ele apenas o karma da semana de aniversário consegue rivalizar.

Enfim, calhou de M14 entrar no Magic Online na virada de julho para agosto e eu até comecei bem. Consegui um 4-0 em meu primeiro Daily no formato com uma lista do RG Kibler, mas após este daily foram 11 torneios Standard seguidos sem premiar, era 0-2, 1-2 e um ou outro 2-2 mas nunca um 3-1 ou 4-0 para me jogar na área de premiação. Tentei de tudo : RG Kibler, Naya Domri, Rg Aggro, UWR, BG, Jund….

Tirei um pouco do foco do Standard na semana do MOCS Modern. O BG Rock (o mesmo utilizado por alguns membros da Channel Fireball no World Championship) estava muito bem posicionado e me deu algumas bons resultados nos Daily Events porém não no MOCS aonde não passei de um 5-3, em seguida voltando ao standard o futuro parecia negro, até que o parceiro Jonathan ‘Jonais’ Melamed resolveu insistir que eu deveria voltar a jogar de Aristocrats.

Na véspera do GP Guadalajara em Maio eu tentei diversas versões de Aristocrats mas nenhuma rodou, parecia que a Falkenrath Aristocrat não queria saber mais de mim e as versões novas, Act2, Junk aristocrats e nem aquelas mais ousadas com 4 cores, nenhuma rodou bem em minha mão. Mas agora as armas eram outras, o Xathrid Necromancer dava uma melhora considerável ao deck. Será a hora de voltar ao lado da Falkenrath?

*** Falkenrath, volta pra mim?

Nisso já estávamos na semana do torneio. O Fernando confirmou que viria e esse era um deck que eu tinha condições de conseguir emprestado, sem tentação de querer jogar de RG, Naya ou BG, partiu Aristocrats.

Eu comecei com a seguinte lista :

Sim, copiado na cara-de-pau do Michael de Fiore, que fez Top4 no Starcity Open do dia 25 de Agosto em Baltimore.

Eu pude sentir alguns problemas como na base de mana. Com apenas 11 fontes capazes de conjurar o Campeão no primeiro turno temos apenas 78% de ter uma em nossa mão inicial, voltando ao passado, lá na época do GP Rio, com 13 fontes teremos 84% o que é um número bem mais aceitável.

/Dica, procurem sempre utilizar ao menos 13 fontes de primeiro turno em seus decks que tenham um Drop1 do estilo do Champion of the Parish ou um Llanowar Elves!

Mesmo assim eu tive resultados bem razoáveis com o deck. Vendo todo potencial do deck eu sabia que tinha que me manter jogando com ele.

Em seguida tentei a lista utilizada pelo _Soku_ no Magic Online para vencer um Premier Event :

Gerry Thompson em seu artigo para a Star City fala sobre a lista, sendo uma de suas considerações o Star City Open daquela semana. De mais intrigante na lista temos Brimstone Volleys como remoções adicionais e uma forma de finalizar jogos contra controles mas ainda contamos com apenas 11 fontes brancas para o primeiro turno.

O acréscimo de Mutavaults ao deck é muito interessante ao deck, dando uma “proteção” razoável contra flood, porém 3 pareciam muito.

Joguei mais um pouco com o deck e após tanto tempo apenas perdendo foi bom voltar a vencer.

Resolvi fazer algumas alterações, como adicionar 2 Plains ao deck, elevando para 13 a quantidade de fontes brancas para o Campeão e o Viajante no primeiro turno, cortando o terceiro Mutavault e uma Dragonskull Summit. Segui indo bem no Magic Online mas após jogar o Challenge da Sexta, com apenas 1 War Priest of Thune no side (afinal, por que eu queria dois deles?) e sem Duress acabei abrindo 3-0 e perdi duas seguidas para Bant Auras que pareceu ser um matchup que você precisa no primeiro game de uma mão absurda com múltiplos campeões para ter chance e algumas cartas de side para competir nos games com sideboard.

*** Véspera do Torneio

Parceiro Fernando pegou um ônibus de Bauru no início da noite e apesar do horário pegou algum trânsito na chegada à São Paulo, aguardei ele no lendário Rei das Batidas e após uma breve parada para comer e afins era hora de durmir, porém a gente cometeu um erro aqui.

Cartas Comuns e Incomuns… é, as vezes a gente verifica se todas as raras e míticas estão disponíveis e esquecemos das malditas cartinhas mais baratas mas que de repetne somem no meio de seu mar de cartas. Apesar de minha dificuldade para durmir me faltou forças para seguir procurando cartas e acordei bem atrasado, tendo tido um sono péssimo. Fiz um esforço e partiu São José dos Campos.

*** Torneio do Sábado 31/08 – Valendo Passagem na Mundo Kinoene – São José dos Campos/SP

Parceiro Fernando ligou para a loja para garantir que não iamos ficar de fora e pé na estrada. Minha mãe ainda fortaleceu fazendo uns misto-quentes para a gente comer no caminho (Dona Vânia s2).

Aqui um outro erro estratégico meu, como faltaram algumas cartas para o Aristocrats o Fernando falou “Então, você joga com o BG e eu monto alguma coisa”, mas eu não estava nada bem e devia ter deixado ele com o deck completo e talvez até ficar durmindo dentro do carro nas horas do torneio, infelizmente não pensei nisso na hora. Mal parceiro Fernando

Contamos com 31 jogadores no torneio, sendo 5 rodadas.

Joguei com a seguinte lista :

Infelizmente a internet do meu celular falhou (100% das vezes em que estou no desespero o 3g da Vivo falha comigo!!!) e eu não pude nem receber as listas que os parceiros Enzo Real e Jonais estão utilizando no Magic Online, com bom sucesso, e tive que ir com uma mais padrão. Das listas mais tradicionais, de diferente apenas a ausência da Vraska e em seu lugar um Devour Flesh.

E assim foi meu torneio :

– Round 1 : Rafael Garcia – Naya Blitz – 2-1
– Round 2 : Pedro Gregório – Aristocrats – 0-2
– Round 3 : Wilson Vida – Naya Domri – 2-0
– Round 4 : Alberto Buzzo – Aristocrats Act2 – 0-2
– Round 5 : João Concimo – RG Kibler – 2-0

Nada mais irônico e poético do que eu perder duas vezes no torneio para Aristocrats.

Eu muliguei uma boa quantidade de vezes no torneio mas minhas draws contra o Blitz, o Naya e o RG foram bem boas e o deck já tem um match razoável contra eles de qualquer forma. Agora contra os Aristocrats? Contra estes eu sofri. Certamente o Human Aristocrats é o pior match do BG, todas as coisas que estão no deck são complicadas para o BG se virar, existe uma infinidade de tokens e Doomed Travelers para ignorar os Desecration Demons e não é incomum seu Champion of the Parish/Falkenrath Aristocrats sobreviverem a um Mutilate.

No match contra Act2 eu sofri com umas mãos não muito boas e talvez meu keep no mulligan a 6, no game1, de 2 Tragic Slip, Devour Flash, 2 Sign in Blood e Overgrown Tomb tenha sido um erro (não, eu não comprei o segundo terreno hehe).

Infelizmente o parceiro Fernando também foi mal com seu GW DESESPERO.dec, ao menos o dia de magic acabou bem cedo para nós então partiu voltar para Sampa!

/Pois é, difícil até achar a gente nos Standings!

*** Sem Desespero Nada Acontece

Pois é, eu já falei que Agosto geralmente é um mês tenso para o meu lado né? Bom, saimos cedo de São José dos Campos, então eu já estava combinando de ir na Padaria do meu parceiro Rhodner, que fica no extremo Sul Paulista (para quem não conhece, quando se chega de São José dos Campos, se chega pela região norte/leste de São Paulo), iria passar na casa de um amigo que iria junto e já que ele mora na Zona Norte e então era caminho.

Porém já começou dando errado pegando trânsito tanto na Ayrton Senna como na subida para a Zona Norte partindo da maginal, dai eu tive uma decisão : Marginal Tietê+Pinheiros ou 23 de Maio para alcançar? Me achei genial indo pela 23, só que não. Trânsito por lá, mudei para a 9 de Julho e trânsito também dai decidi cortar pela Paulista e estava rolando uma manifestação. Não, não para por ai, o maedozehmovel resolve foldar e super-aqueceu.

Se fosse falta de manutenção… mas não, toda peça do radiador havia sido trocada nesse mesmo mês e aparentemente os bons mecânicos cagaram em algo (ao menos estava na garantia). Padaria cancelada, hora de voltar no desespero para casa e tentar relaxar, Agosto acabaria ali e com fé não teria mais tanta zica…

**** Torneio de Domingo 01/09 – Valendo 20 Box na Magic Domain – São Paulo/SP

Sem o Zehmovel (RIP), e com o MaedoZehmovel quebrado, contei com o meu pai nos dando uma carona para a Domain (vlw Pai!), me senti voltando a 2001 quando ele me dava tantas caronas para ir e/ou voltar dos torneios hehe

O Fernando iria jogar com a lista que o Brad Nelson havia saido invicto do Community Cup Challenge da sexta-feira no Magic Online :

Contamos com 111 jogadores e o principal? Sem atrasos no inicio! Como os jogadores estavam com as inscrições já pagas anteriormente, o processo acabou tão acelerado que o torneio iria começar bem cedo \o/

Também contei com o desespero padrão de pegar cartas na hora e tudo sempre na boa magia acabou dando certo.

*** Round 1 – Gustavo Vieira Bueno – Naya Domri

– Game 1 : Perdi no Dado. O Match contra Naya geralmente se define se eles conseguem botar pressão o suficiente, comprar Thundermaw Hellkites E alguns Ghor-Clan Rampagers. Sem Traple ou a evasão do Dragão fica difícil de passar pelos diversos bloqueadores pelo chão e se você tem Blood Artists e Xathrid Necromancers na mesa… E o game 1 não foi diferente, ele até tinha Boros Reckoner e Scavenging Ooze do lado dele, mas eu tinha Doomed Travelers, dois Xathrid Necromancers, Cartel Aristocrat e Blood Artist, eventualmente comprei um Falkenrath Aristocrat que foi mais do que suficiente

– Game 2 : Semelhante ao game 1, mas ele travou um pouco nos terrenos e se tivesse um segundo Ghor-Clan Rampager poderia ter me matado no último turno.

*** Round 2 – Diogo Panzarini – Bant Control

– Game 1 : Perdi no Dado. Começo com Champion of the Parish seguido de Doomed Traveler e Falkenrath Aristocrat, ele tenta um Unexpected Result que revela apenas um terreno e na volta morre para o segundo Falkenrath.

– Game 2 : Dessa vez ele mulliga e acaba zicando, rapidamente mato ele com Champions e Falkenraths.

0-2 no Dado

*** Round 3 – Thales França – RG Domri

– Game 1 : Ganhei no Dado. Começo com Doomed Traveler, Gather the Townsfolk e Xathrid Necromancer, ele tem alguns Flinthoof Boar e Scavenging Ooze na mesa. Eu faço um Blood Artist e em seguida dois Falkenrath Aristocrat e ele não teve como montar uma ofensiva.

– Game 2 : Nesse jogo ele veio mais forte, Flinthoof Boar, Domri Rade e Hellrider enquanto eu não sai com as cartas defensivas de costume, apesar de ter como matar o primeiro Hellrider o segundo foi mais do que suficiente para me matar.

– Game 3 : Comecei com dois Champion of the Parish seguidos de Gather the Townsfolk, ele tinha Domri Rade e Chandra Pyromaster mas minhas criaturas já estavam grandes de mais e ele não teve muita defesa.

*** Round 4 – Bruno Queiroz – Mono Red

– Game 1 : Ganhei no dado. Ele mata meu primeiro Champion of the Parish mas eu também mato o Stromkirk Noble dele, em seguida também mato um Hellrider e faço um Blood Artist, ao lado de Cartel Aristocrat e Gather the Townsfolk, ainda seguro com 12 de vida ele acaba concedendo.

– Game 2 : Ele começa com Stromkirk Noble e em seguida tem um Burning-Tree Emissary (ou outra criatura de poder 2) encantado com um Volcanic Strenght. Eu até tinha sideado War Priest of Thune para dentro mas estava sem jeito de comprar a tempo o War Priest e algo para matar o Noble.

– Game 3 : Meu primeiro Champion of the Parish novamente morre mas eu tenho um segundo seguido de Gather the Townsfolk, mesmo assim ele tenta um ataque com Burning-Tree Emissary para cima do meu Champion o que me faz pensar que ele tem ou um Pillar of Flames ou um Shock em sua mão. Eu estava preparando a hora de usar um Profit/Loss (como estava travado em terrenos, só usaria a parte preta) para fechar a vantagem da partida em meu favor. Ele tinha dois Young Pyromancer e dois Burning-Tree Emissary na mesa, como eu fiquei na cabeça que ele tinha um burn de dois de dano na mão, eu resolvi tentar extrair mais valor ainda da minha mágica. Ele ataca com os dois Burning-Tree Emissary, como ele não deu o Pillar antes de atacar, então pensei “ele tem um Shock e não um Pillar”, então eu resolvo bloquear um Emissário com os meus dois tokens e aguardo ele responder com o Shock que ele com certeza tinha! Só que ele não tinha respostas, então eu simplesmente deixei meus dois tokens morrerem e aguardei o passe para usar o Loss. Bom, meu erro foi simples, eu podia ter jogado o simples, bloquear os dois Emissary com os tokens e no passe fazer o Loss 4 por 1. Mas eu achei que podia extrair mais valor, um Shock a mais, o que ainda não era ruim, já que naquele momento eu tinha certeza que ele tinha mesmo o Shock, mas na hora que ele passa a prioridade após o block eu deveria ter usado o Loss ali mesmo, assim eu tomaria 1 de dano a menos do ataque do outro Emissário e salvaria um dos meus tokens. Bom, o jogo já estava razoável para o meu lado e mesmo trocando um 4 por 1 por um 2 por 1 e ainda sem ter o quarto terreno, e muito menos um vermelho para os Falkenrath, eu tinha o Champion que cresceu mais ainda e finalizou a partida.

As vezes tudo que você precisa é fazer o mais óbvio e simples sem ficar imaginando diversas possibilidades do que seu oponente pode ter ou não na mão. Melhor perder para o que ele tem do que ele não tem correto?

*** Round 5 – Alexandre Conrado – Naya Domri
Ele também está classificado para o Pro Tour Dublin!

– Game 1 : Perco no dado. Ele começa forte com Boros Reckoner no segundo turno e um Domri Rade no terceiro turno. Eu achei que tinha começado bem com dois Champion of the Parish nos dois primeiros turnos mas ambos morrem quando ele utiliza o Fight do Domri com o Champion 2/2 e com a habilidade do Reckoner matando o outro. A partir dai o jogo já estava perdido.

– Game 2 : Começo de novo com Champion of the Parish, agora com Cartel Aristocrat, Xathrid Necromancer e um Falkenrath Aristocrat, ele não saiu forte dessa vez e não teve reação.

– Game 3 : Ele vem mais forte agora mas eu venho com Doomed Traveler, Cartel Aristocrat, alguns Tragic Slips para estabilizar até Blood Artists e Falkenrath Aristocrats entrem em campo para finalizar

Com 111 jogadores eu poderia empatar as duas últimas e passar tranquilamente ao Top8! Ao menos essa era a expectativa

Éramos apenas três 5-0s no torneio, então era aguardar e provavelmente se fosse paired down eu poderia empatar….

Saem os standings …

O outro 5-0 (Israel Escorizza) acabou empatando com um dos 4-0-1 (Bruno Salazar), então éramos três 5-0-1 e um teria que ser paired down.

Ainda assim olhando rapidamente a lista vi a possibilidade de meu oponente não passar com o empate, mas não pude checar de novo, ao chegar na mesa ele me comunicou que não poderia empatar pois ficaria fora, então partiu jogar.

*** Round 7 – Gabriel Silva Frei – WRb Tokens

– Game 1 : Perdi no Dado. Bom, se tem um match que parece um pesadelo, fora o Act2, seria esse. Ele faz diversos tokens dos mais diversos, faz um Intangible Virtue e eu tento em segurar com um Falkenrath Aristocrat ao lado de um Blood Artist e diversos tokens de Gather the Townsfolk, porém ir para a race é impossível já que ele tem um Vault of the Archangel, apesar de meu Falkenrath já estar 9/6 eventualmente eu tive que bloquear com o Blood Artist para não morrer e apesar de segurar muitos turnos com menos de 5 de vida eu eventualmente morro.

– Game 2 : Eu saio rápido com um Champion of the Parish seguido de Gather the Townsfolk, ele tem 2 Rest in Peace na mesa então opto por destruir um Intangible Virtue com meu War Priest of Thune, ele acaba floodando e eventualmente morre.

– Game 3 : Ele mulliga bastante e acaba zicando, eu saio novamente com Champion of the Parish e sigo com diversos Doomed Travelers, Xathride Necromancers e ainda tinha um War Priest of Thune na mão para o caso de precisar destruir algo.

Passo em primeiro!

Agora no sofá de casa e podendo ver com calma, percebo que meu oponente poderia sim empatar que iria passar, porém na hora, tendo tão pouco tempo para analisar os Standings não foi possível ver isso.

*** Top8

Toda a galera se sentou para o Top8 e a premiação total do Top8 era de 16 Boxes de Dragon’s Maze, a galera sugere splitarmos a premiação, o que foi aceito por todos e não iria ser eu o cara do contra. Para valer a pena jogar, eu teria que pelo menos vencer minhas partidas do Top8 e do Top4 e se perdesse logo de cara estaria no prejuizo e achei bem razoável não arriscar.

Dos jogadores do Top8, apenas um queria o Bye2 para Santiago, o Fábio, nenhum outro se mostrou interessado e prontamente 5 deles foram embora após splitarmos a premiação, como eu não fui pareado contra ele, eu pretendia jogar pelo playmat caso alguém também quisesse.

Como o último a não ir embora, e que seria meu adversário no Top4, também estava interessado no playmat, sentamos para jogar.

*** Top4 – Henrique Montenegro – Bant Auras

– Game 1 : Por ter melhor seed no suiço eu opto por começar. Mulligo para 5 atrás de alguma mão mais forte. Eu sei que o match contra Bant Auras é complicado no primeiro game e minha melhor chance é abrir uma mão muito rápida. Eu até tenho alguma força terrestre com Champion of the Parish, Xathrid Necromancer e Doomed Traveler mas ele rapidamente tem um Fiendslayer Paladin com um Rancor. Eventualmente ele ataca e eu imagino que ele comprou ou um Selesnya Charm (que agora eu sei que ele nem se quer usava no deck) ou um Simic Charm, eu tenho 2 Xathrid Necromancer e 3 tokens de Zumbi e eu deveria ter apenas bloqueado com 3 criaturas, já que eu não teria como matar a criatura dele se ele comprou o Simic Charm, resolvo bloquear com todas elas e ele tinha o Simic Charm e meus dois Xathrid Necromancers ficam vivo. Quando eu consigo me virar com o primeiro Paladin ele faz um novo. Eu tenho um falkenrath Aristocrat na mão mas não tenho mana vermelha mesmo após o décimo (por ai!) turno, eventualmente após alguns turnos da mesa travada, eu tendo alguns Zumbis, Blood Artist, dois tokens de Gather the Townsfolk e os dois Xathrid Necromancer, ele tinha 34 de vida e eu 11, eventualmente ele compra um Spectral Flight e eu ainda sem a mana vermelha para o Falkenrath morro.

– Game 2 : Dessa vez ele mulliga e eu fico com uma mão de apenas 1 terreno mas com 2 Champion of the Parish e Gather the Townsfolk, ele não vem muito rápido mas ainda assim tem dois Fiendslayer Paladin para segurar o chão. Eventualmente compro Blood Artists e dessa vez com manas vermelhas para o Falkenrath e com War Priest of Thune para o caso dele ter algum enchant que eu precisasse destruir, acabo matando ele.

– Game 3 : Eu mulligo novamente mas minha mão veio bastante forte e ele veio lento. Comecei com Champion of the Parish, Cartel Aristocrat, Xathrid Necromancer, Blood Artists e no turno em que eu compro a Falkenrath para o ataque eu ainda tinha 16 de vida e ele não tinha muita resposta.

7-0-1 (14-5) no Torneio
3-3 no Dado

Fico com o playmat e o Fabio com os byes para santiago e todos nós com 2 Boxes de Dragon’s Maze o/

Mesmo após eu jogar pelo Top4 ainda era bem cedo e deu para eu e o parceiro Fernando irmos comer na boa festa de Nossa Senhora Achirupita, que apesar de eu ser paulistano eu nunca havia ido.

*** Pós Torneio
Realmente não sei por que demorei tanto para voltar para o lado da Falkenrath Aristocrat e pena que não poderei aproveitar ela mais tanto pelo Standard… mas quem sabe nossa história não volta em algum futuro torneio Modern? =D

De qualquer forma… FALKENRATH ARISTOCRAT, JAMAIS ME ESQUECEREI DE VOCÊ!

Depois do torneio segui jogando com o baralho, eventualmente cortando os Brimtone Volleys que nunca fizeram nada de especial para mim e uma pena que a boa Vampirona e o grande Campeão da Paróquia vão rodar tão em breve.
Novamente agradeço a galera que me emprestou as cartas no final de semana, Fernando, Thiago Lucena, Aluchan, Coda, Feio, Julio e Chico 🙂 e também para o Jonais e o Enzo que fortalecem sempre no MTGO!! Valeu mesmo ^^

Boa Expectativa, Resultado ruim

Eae galera do desespero!

Apesar de minha viagem ao PTQ no Rio ter tido sua dose de desespero, o resultado foi péssimo.

Viajei de ônibus na sexta-feira, enfrentei as diversas obras no entorno da rodoviária, e imagino que boa parte dos taxistas nem sabem aonde está o novo ponto deles por lá já que vi muitos passando batido enquanto umas 50 pessoas esperavam por um táxi. O Busão para Ipanema não foi tão desesperador, um ou dois Chopps e um bom cinema depois era hora de durmir.

O Deck já estava decidido havia uma semana. Eu iria jogar de Rw Burn, lista do Edel, já que eu consegui aproveitamento superior a 80% jogando apenas 8man com o deck (45 vitórias para 9 derrotas e 13 vitórias em 22 Queues de 8Man). Eu estava afiado em basicamente todos matchups relevantes e estava esperando um resultado bom no final de semana.

93 Jogadores para 7 Rodadas e este foi meu torneio :

– R1 : Bant Control/Fog 2-0
Tomei Fogs e alguns Sylvan Primordials porém meu segundo Skullcrack selou a partida no segundo game
– R2 : Naya Control 1-2 (estilo Brad Nelson)
Fui raceado no primeiro game por uma Assemble the Legion aonde precisaria topdeckar 2 Burns em 3 Draws + 1 scry mas consegui 0. No game 3 eu tomei uma decisão errada no penúltimo turno mas que ainda assim ele iria precisar ter uma remoção na mão e eu não comprar nenhuma spell em minha draw step. Ele tinha a remoção, eu comprei um Mutavault que era bom para não morrer caso ele não tivesse uma removal na volta, ele tinha e eu perdi.
– R3 : Jund Midrange 1-2 (pouco diferente da lista do MAtt Costa, com Elvish Mystic e sem Anger)
Fui raceado no primeiro game, aonde eu precisava de um burn ou phoenix ou dragão em dois draws e consegui nada, venci o segundo game mesmo após mulligar e floodar graças ao meu segundo Dragão e no terceiro game resolvi keepar 2 Templos BW, Mutavault, Chained, Assemble, Magma Jet e Lightning Strike e morri no turno6 sem ter alguma fonte vermelha.

Perdi tão cedo que deu tempo de entrar no MOCS do Player of the Year. Algum desespero aqui para fazer a Internet colaborar e eu conseguir jogar e meus resultados :

– R1 : Rg Devotion 2-1 (terminei com menos de 2 minutos no relógio enquanto meu oponente tinha mais de 15)
– R2 : Mono Black 1-2
– R3 : Mono Blue 2-0
– R4 : BR Midrange 2-1
– R5 : Mono Blue 1-2
– R6 : Mono Blue 2-0
– R7 : Mono Black 2-0

A derrota na segunda rodada foi bem triste. Após abrir 1-0 eu fiquei com uma mão de Templo BW, Templo RW, Magma Jet, 2 Chained to the Rocks, Anger of the Gods e Assemble the Legion. Tomei Thoughtseize no primeiro turno (tirando Magma Jet) e Pack Rat no segundo. Eu não comprei nem uma remoção para o primeiro rato e muito menos a segunda fonte vermelha para limpá-los com o Anger of Gods 😦 Mulliguei para 5 no terceiro game e é isso ae.

A derrota que me eliminou do torneio foi tensa mas ao menos mais justa. Mono Blue é um dos matchups favoráveis do deck e eu estava invicto no confronto até o momento mas meu adversário jogou MUITO bem e além disso comprou mais MAster of Waves do que eu comprei respostas e acabei perdendo.

Terminei dentro do Top32, o que me rendeu bons 12packs mas nada de excepcional em um final de semana que eu esperava ao menos um Top8.

Parabéns para o Tulio Jaudy pela vitória no PTQ com mais uma de suas criações bizarras e vale a lembrança para os parceiros Enzo e Obama que chegaram a mais um Top8, aposto que vocês ainda ganham um PTQ em breve! Meu brother Rhodner também está no caminho, fez Top8 no PTQ e já estava brigando por um Top8 no PTQ selado de Sâo Paulo, se jogar mais PTQs e seguir com um tempinho pro MTGO jajá ganha também. Só não podem desistir 🙂

* Just some random words by a grinder (or former grinder) just a few days before the MTGO Daily Events get back, sorry for the English and the writing, no editing at all around here hehe

My name is Jose Francisco Dantas M. da Silva, I’m 29 years old and I started playing magic in 1999 with my first tournament being the Prophecy Pre-Release in 2000.

The first time I decided to take Magic into a more competitive manner was during GP Rio 2001 as I was at home watching the coverage and wondering “Why Am I not there?”

After that I started playing every PTQ, GPT, random store tournament, everything in my city or nearby and in my first 2 years of tournaments I qualified 3 Times to the Pro Tour (Played in 2 of those) and played in 2 Brazilian GPs (Top8, Top32), after that a bunch of my friends were taking a break and as I couldn’t afford to travel to the PT even If I qualified, I took a break as well.

In the next years I got back into the game and took a break again a few times and all of those for the same reason : I Couldn’t be competitive anymore. I tried playtesting IRL with my friends, reading all articles availlable but at the time I used Magic Online only to watch a few replays as I didn’t want to invest in digital cards and I was at the X-2 bracket early on almost all tournaments I was playing. I’m an average player and I need more time practicing than most to learn every bit of a format and without proper testing I just couldn’t get the level to win a PTQ again.

Things changed for me in November 2009. I was having a few problems in my life and needed something to distract me so I decided to play a few sealed/drafts, after that I realized I had most of the cards of a Mono Black Vampires Innistrad Block deck and started playing constructed and by the time 2010 came I already had a few Extended decks to play during the PTQ Season and in March I had a Jund deck to play in Standard as well. Eventually I “went Infinite” and had every deck in Standard, Extended or Block and I figure it out that I could even keep living from the game and still having a bunch of time to keep studying all that being competitive in the game I Love?

I know and I bet every grinder knows that grinding MTGO isn’t the most lucrative job in the world but considering our country It’s still good enough and we can do it playing the game we love, so why not? It wasn’t the case as “MTGO is our only and last hope” to get money and It was sad people making fun of us “now get a real job” because MTGO was our real Job, We used it to pay our bills and everything and all that just playing the game. A bunch of people have this dream of becaming a Pro Player and living of the game, It’s hard already to become a Pro living in Europe or USA, imagine for us down here in Brazil? In the past years besides the Brazilian Juggernauts only Pedro got close to getting a Pro level and He’s a MTGO Grinder as well. Grinding MTGO was as close as we could get to be a Pro.

I understand that Wizards has nothing with us and I had a Plan B/C/etc for when MTGO wasn’t working anymore but I thought we would have some short notice on that. We knew the program was full of Bugs and big tournaments ending in a Crash wasn’t new for anyone but the way It ended up? I bet no one was thinking It would be this way. Taking off the DEs/PEs all of a sudden impacted a lot and made a bunch of us just do whatever else they could do. And anyway, is that bad for Wizards to have some people living of MTGO grinding? Isn’t any useful a Grinder Top8ing a GP or a PT? At least on Brazil the last 2 GPs Winners were MTGO Grinders at the time.

With MTGO to help me better testing of eveery format I decided to get back into playing every PTQ I could. I played 10 PTQs in my state, only missing two, and I was already qualified during one of those, 5 in Rio (430kms~266 miles) and 1 in Porto Alegre (1119 kms ~ 696 miles) and got 2 Wins, 3 other Top8s and lost the win-in for Top8 4 other times, besides those I played in 4 WMCqs as well (2x Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre and Rio) with a Top8 and a win-in loss. Had some results online as well with a 2nd place in a Standard MOCS another 2nd place in a Limited PTQ for Honolulu and a Top8 in a Modern PTQ for San Diego. It may not look like great or awesome results, but I’m going to repeat myself, I’m just an average player that makes a bunch of mistakes every game and even then MTGO could get me to compete and get a bunch of times to the Pro Tour.

Not only that, I had a great season on 2012/13 with 21 Pro Points! It may be not enough for Gold but for a Brazilian without even playing all the PTs of the season, nor the World Cup and not many GPs that was awesome and without MTGO I bet I couldn’t even get close to that. Wish I could play in the Next PT but Dublin didn’t went well for me and neither the IRL PTQs I could play, unfortunately that Silver level will only give me 2 byes (yeah even after that awesome season, Winning a GP and everything I’m no where near close of having 3 byes) until August 😦
We’re just a few days of December 11th when we should get a few DEs back but I know a bunch of us have moved on and I don’t know what I’m going to do, I barely played in this month and I even have a PTQ on December 14h that I couldn’t test properly. Wish there was more love for ur grinder, specially for the South American ones, also I wish we had another Latin, playing with the fellow latins on the train.

I know it’s a bit late for an year in review article, but I started writing it early December and just couldn’t finish it before.

The goal of this text is to improve my English as I figured I needed more practice in my writing and what’s better than talk a bit about Magic?

Feel free to criticize anything as my goal is to improve, then anything that comes to help will be appreciated.

Hello Despair Crew! 🙂

I thought it would be cool to write about my 2012, which was a pretty intense magic year for me.

Well let’s begin with the last Month of 2011. I finished the year with some “close” results. I lost in the finals of a MTGO PTQ in one weekend and in the Top8 of a IRL PTQ in the next one. Got close to qualify for Honolulu but well, there weren’t even pity invites back then lol :p But that was ok, I had prepared myself to have all Modern cards on my disposal for the PTQ Season and in December before the bans I at least 3-1ed in ALL Modern dailys that fired. Even after the bans I had such good results when switching from Zoo to Jund that I was pretty happy and excited for 2012.

*** SEASON 1 – January to April –

** MODERN PTQs for BARCELONA

Well, if I was happy, excited and winning a lot in December, in January it turned the other way around. I started to lose a lot, maybe the opponents weren’t trying fun decks anymore or I don’t know. I was only losing and losing, I’d switch decks around and nothing would change. I barely qualified for the first MOCS season which was Modern as well.

My Modern Results :
– PTQ Online January 15^th : 4-4 with Jund
– PTQ Online February 3^rd : 5-3 with Caw-Blade
– MOCS Season 1 – February 4^th : 1-2 with Bant-Blade
– PTQ IRL Porto Alegre March 4^th : See above
– PTQ IRL Sao Paulo 1 March 11^th : 5-3 with Loam
– PTQ Online March 24^th : 1-3 with Jund
– PTQ Online March 25^th : 5-3 with Gifts Rock
Well, I traveled to Porto Alegre which is 1119 kms (696 miles) away from Sao Paulo (my city) but couldn’t find a complete deck to play. I was going to play missing 6~8 cards but ended up deciding not to.

I had tried basicly everything at this point, played a bunch of decks in Daily Events and 2/8 Man Queues and 5 different decks in PTQs/Mocs. Gifts was the deck I got back into 3-1s in a bunch of DEs but it was lacking a bit to actually win a PTQ and on the last possible moment.

– PTQ IRL Sao Paulo 2 : March 31th – Win with RG Tron

That was amazing, I playtested IRL with some friends (Rhodner Paiva, Felipe ‘MBC’ Madeira and Caio ‘IsOo’ Braga) and we needed so many cards to build decks for the 4 of us and in the end I got no Grove of the Burnwillows, no All is Dusts and a few more cards. I was missing 10 cards total! I started the PTQ by losing my 1^st rd due to having a 4^th Clasm instead of the All is Dust (I know it was the 4^th because it was in Spanish M10 one and the other 3 were from Ice Age) and 0-1 in the second round due to having a Karplusan Forest (alongside a Tendo Ice Bridge, a Stomping Ground and a Forest) instead of the Grove of the Burnwillows. Somehow I managed to win that round and every other round (except the ID in Round 8) and win the tournament. Really, winning a Modern PTQ with one of the few decks I didn’t play online and lacking 10 cards? AWESOME! Even if I was to made a story like that I wouldn’t be that brilliant hehe

** MOCS Seasons 1~4

Well,  Season 1 was Modern and I already talked about it on the Modern section. I qualified for seasons 2 and 3 but not to season 4. Couldn’t even play neither of them as season 2 was on the same weekend as the PTQ in Porto Alegre , and season 3 was on the same day as the PTQ I won.

*** SEASON 2 – May to August –

** PRO TOUR AVACYN RESTORED

This was the main tournament for me on this season, I was back again on the Pro Tour after one year and again it was going to be Block Constructed. In fact, this was my 4^th Pro Tour and 3^rd with Block Constructed included!

The other 2 Brazilian PTQs were won by friends and besides them Willy Edel was qualified was well. Unfortunately it wasn’t possible to get all Brazilians together this time but that was ok, I had two invites and could only attend one due to dates and such.

Eduardo ‘Shooter’ Borges got me in his group. We would be staying at this awesome apartment that was 700 meters away from the event site and so close to the Subway Stations and so on. The Test Group was :

Yes, that’s a bunch of Chris on the group 😀 and also yes, we had 5 ppl out of 9 that had a name started with C !!!

It was the first time I had a real group to test for a Pro Tour and it was amazing we had a lot of great players in the house and at the beginning of 2012 I promised myself to get better at draft and that was the best chance to get to know the format.

The best thing about IRL drafting is that we can play the whole 3 matches instead of only one if you start 0-1 on MTGO and also you can watch the other players and see what cards are working or not for them. Gotta tell you, I learnt a lot on those days and was feeling very well with the AVR Draft for the Pro Tour.

On the other hand, we couldn’t master a Block deck for the house. We knew that the GW deck wasn’t good (we had lists like the one CFB played) but we somehow let the Reanimators/UG(w) decks on the sidelines eventhough we got so close to the lists people played at the Pro Tour. The only deck we didn’t really have was the UW Miracles.

I Played the Boros deck that was serving me nicely even before AVR on MTGO and Willy Edel jumped in with the same 75. We had 3 people in the house playing a BUG Ooze deck, other 3 with a BGW Sigarda Control and Shooter was on UR Control.

I started 2-3 at the Pro Tour, managed to 2-1 with a not so good deck in order to get into day 2. Managed another 2-1 with a great draft to start day 2 but got another 3 losses in Block before dropping out.

It was the first time I day 2’ed a Pro Tour and I knew I learnt a lot and drafted quite nicely and eventhough I went 2-6 with the Boros deck, Willy Edel went 7-2-1 which was enough to put him in the top25 ! Now it was time to get back to standard in order to qualify for Seattle…

** STANDARD WCQs and PTQs

Actually the Standard Season started in April, 2 weeks after the PTQ I won. They made the 3 PTQs of the Season being on the same cities there were helding the WCQs, so all of them made a “magic weekend”, with the PTQ in one day and the WCQ on the other.

The first PTQ was on Rio de Janeiro, and was quite away from Standard as my focus was entirely on Modern  so I just asked some people on what I should play and I had 2 decks for the weekend on Rio de Janeiro.

Pike Delver by Thiago ‘Bolov0’ Saporito and RG Aggro by Juliano ‘babones’ Gennari. The plan was to play one deck on each day.

The PTQ was on Saturday and I started 5-0 even which a bunch of ‘not so good’ plays, after 2 IDs I was in the Top8 where I lost against a UB Zombies deck. After Top8’ing on Saturday I decided to stick with the Pike Delver deck only switching 2 cards for Sunday, however that didn’t quite work out as I 0-2 so fast. At least it was a very hot day and I could get away from the tournament site (which was even hotter than the rest of the city) and enjoyed the rest of the day at the beach with a lot of mtg friends J

After getting back from Barcelona I was 100% focused on Standard, now with AVR I knew the best deck was the Angel Delver so I started to grind with him on magic online, and was trying my best to not let me play so sloppy like I did in Rio. And that was my results :

– WMCQ Porto Alegre June 2^nd  : 1-2 drop
– PTQ Porto Alegre June 3rd  : 4-2-1
– PTQ Sao Paulo June 23th : 2-2 drop
– WMCQ Sao Paulo June 24th : 3-2 drop

I even played in one online PTQ with the same deck :
– PTQ Online June 16^th : 5-3 (playing the mirror match 6 times)

Well, the only time I was close to the Top8 was in the Porto Alegre PTQ where I was 4-1 and would be able to win and then id, but got a non-intentional draw on round 6 and proceeded to lose my second shot on the last round.

It was 7 PTQs/WCQs with Delver, 2 before and 5 after the Angel and I only Top8’ed when I knew so little about the format and had only a bunch of failures after that. I knew Delver was the best deck but maybe I should have tried something else in between, i couldn’t master the deck eventhough I tried really hard, sometimes we just have to let it go and try something else, even if we know the deck is the best, if we can’t play it 100% it may be best to try something else.

I played even in one more online qualifier :

– PTQ Online July 8^th : 2-2 drop with RG Aggro

Then I thought I was done, but we still had a few events online and a Grand Prix in Sao Paulo before the end of that season.

** GRAND PRIX SAO PAULO

As we got close to the GP I wasn’t feeling much motivated. I was only losing on Magic Online and didn’t feel I could peel a nice result in a Limited GP. I even skipped the Pre-Release but then I was asked by Willy Edel and Juliano Gennari to travel to Rio to playtest for a few days. At first I declined the invite but ended up going, our playtest group was :

After a few days of intense drafting and talking a lot about the format i felt confident i was understanding it quite well and besides that #geniusedel had promised “come practice with us and day2 is guaranteed”. The most interesting fact about that training weekend was that the player with the best results was Rorix and he was going to be a judge at the GP!

I had only one bye and lost in the finals of the only grinder I tried (played BR Zombies) but after that everything went well. I mean, the result was great!

Started 8-0 to finish day 1 at 8-1, 3-0ed my first Draft and after starting 1-1 in the second (after losing a game with a very controversial judge ruling) I was paired down when I could ID to get in and even after losing I managed to sneak in in 7^th place! Won a pretty close Top8 match in order to qualify for Seattle and all of a sudden instead of no hope of qualifying after a not so good Standard season I qualified in a Limited GP! After 10 and half years I was back in the Top8 of a GP (I know it’s a lot of years but that was only my 5^th GP!).

** MOCS SEASONs 5~8

I qualified for seasons 5, 6 and 7. In fact I didn’t even try that hard for season 8 as it was going to be Legacy and I wouldn’t be able to get a deck for it.

Season 6 was my best season of the year, i got 43 qps with me skipping the last few days, as  I already had enough points for 2 byes and wouldn’t be able to play in it anyway as it was in the same weekend as the PTQ/WMCQ in Sao Paulo. I couldn’t play in the Season 7’s Championship as well as it was on the same weekend as GP Sao Paulo.

I Played season 5 championship that was Block Constructed. I used the same deck I played in Barcelona with a few changes, The Boros Aggro. With no byes I dropped at 3-3 and Babones that played the same list went all the way into the Top8 when he had some bad lucky (mul to 4 and 5) and lost.

*** SEASON 3 – September to December –

** PRO TOUR RETURN TO RAVNICA

My second Pro Tour in the year and this time it would be the first PT of the Pro Player’s Club Season. Also it wouldn’t be another Block Constructed PT so yeah, nice for a change 😀

We had way more Brazilians qualified then usual as we got 4 extra slots on the Brazilian GP and besides the IRL PTQs, Megafone got his spot on an online one. Unfortunately  Joseph couldn’t get his visas. We settled on renting a house and stay there for the week before the Pro Tour, this is the crew of the Brazilian’s Surreal House :

Unfortunately we couldn’t master 8 people for a proper IRL draft.

Before the Pro Tour I was losing a bunch on Magic Online trying to figure out an unfair deck to play. I Tried Infect, Storm and Eggs but couldn’t muster enough wins with any of them. I Tried Eggs more and more because I knew it was going to be good and friend Shooter kept me telling to try harder. However I couldn’t manage to ‘master’ the deck so I had to look for something else.

Buddy Jonais borrowed me a few cards so I could practice with more decks like UW Midrange and RG Tron as well (Jonais <3). But in the end there were only one deck that I wasn’t negative : Blue Affinity.

* ONE WEEK BEFORE THE PRO TOUR : GP SAN JOSE

We had a GP one week before the PT and my team was : megafone and Eduardo ‘L1X0’ Vieira. Besides a few sealeds we didn’t have much experience in the format of the GP as 3×3 drafts aren’t as popular in Brazil as they’re anywhere else.

Since I wasn’t feeling confident back then (so many losses on the recent weeks…) I said I’d gladly play our worst deck if needed and we basicly settled on : Megafone will play the Rakdos deck (well he always play those in any format anyway :p haha), L1X0 will play the Azorius and me playing the Selesnya.

That if things went according to the plan! We would only play Izzet or Golgari if things were the other way around. In the end our decks were fine and besides considering my deck the worst it was actually very powerful and I went 9-2 on day 1 with my friends losing 3 or 4 matchups each but that was enough to get us to day 2 with a 9-2 record.

We would need a 2-3 in the first 5 rounds of day 2 to be in the money but our lack of experience got us and we couldn’t get pass a 1-4 record 😦 . My first draft was the best on the table however I drew 9 lands in 9 draws in the first round 😦 My second draft was ok and I lost against their best deck and won the other round, at least this time both me and L1X0 won on the same round. The last draft was a mess, at least I made sure the guy on my left also wouldn’t have anything close to a deck but well. Sad to day 2 with top20 teams out of 30 getting in the money and we were out…

Besides that we had some great time in LA with mtg friends that were also there like Juliano Gennari, Thiago Saporito, André Franco and Bruno Borges.

* SEATTLE TIME

Now in Seattle we had a lot of time to play some Modern IRL but we had to play drafts on MTGO. Gladly Wizards released the set sooner this time so we had a few days of mtgo to get us started in the format.

In Barcelona I enjoyed more the IRL drafting experience then this time but still we had some discussions and arguments over some cards and usually when one was drafting there were someone else watching and so on.

I still tried to make Eggs work one more time before finally giving up and “GOING TO PLAY THE ONLY DECK THAT GAVE ME WINS IN MODERN THIS YEAR” (of course the RG Tron with 10 missing cards gave me a PT invite but you know…). Megafone was going to play the same 75 and the other 4 were going to just play Jund.

The day before the PT me and megafone had a facebook chat with Shooter to decide our last slots on the sideboard (our Main deck was fine already). After a bunch of crazy ideas we ended up playing the amazing Favorable Winds as 1of counting as our 5^th Master of Etherium!!!

Well, the PT didn’t start so well for me with a 0-2 start and I was just 2-3 at the beginning of the draft. After finishing Day 1 at 4-4 we had everyone on the house qualified for day2 with a 75% win ratio in Draft at that point! After a bad start on day 2 I was basicly out at 5-6 before we could get back in Modern but Edel and Megafone could still Top8 and Rasfaf and Guento were still playing for cash.

Finished 9-7 in the end with me losing a game that I just couldn’t lose on rd 15 but at that time I already knew I would get only a 80^th place at most so I was distracted and made the worst attack ever to lose g3. At least I was so happy my friend megafone got his 1^st Top8 on his 2^nd PT and we also had Edel in the Top8 as well! I’m glad a made part of it and hope he won’t forget me when he gets his platinum status and then Hall of Fame 🙂

* ONE WEEK AFTER THE PT : GP PHILADELPHIA

After Seattle only Other would be going to Philadelphia but that was ok since I was going to meet a longtime and close friend there, João Paulo Araujo that was already on USA on some dentist convention and would be attending the GP in Philly.

Also there would be more friends like Sergio ‘Presuntinho’ Ferry!

The GP was bad for all of US, we couldn’t even day 2. I thought I could manage a X-2 with my sealed pool but after punting a game in Round 4 (I had 2 byes) I went from almost 4-0 to 3-3 drop. But that wasn’t the worst thing, there was a hurricane coming to the city and we were going to be trapped there having to pay the hotel and everything more. =(

That was quite sad, but in the end me and Joao Paulo met a bunch of people from so many places that were trapped as well and we even almost pulled a win on a 3v3 draft alongside Other against Tom Martell, Shuhei Nakamura and Josh Utter-Leyton ! We lost 4-5 and someone of us that i won’t say the name went 0-3!

Also it was amazing to watch a 76ers game and visit the Stadiums 😀

So yeah, that was the end of my 3 weeks trip in USA, with not even a single money finish.

** SEALED PTQs for MONTREAL

After having to spend a bit more than expected after being stuck in Philly, i would have to skip two IRL PTQs in Brasilia and Porto Alegre(around 1000 kms/621 miles distance each). That would be unfortunate as IRL PTQs with less than 100 people are way easier than the 500+ online ones.

Usually I’m not looking forward so much for the limited PTQ Season as my drafting skill are usually very bad but this time I was at least 2-1ing 85% of the 8-4s i was playing so i knew i would have a very good shot if I made it to the Top8.

My first online try was even before RTR was released on MTGO, in September and in the end i played 6 online PTQs Total. And only once I was alive at the last round playing for the Top8 but lost and ended up 10th on breakers. On the other 5, the best I managed was a 7-4, good enough for a 61th place, in a PTQ that all my losses was to Pack Rats on turn2.dec  =(

The only try I had IRL was on a PTQ in São Jose dos Campos, a bit less than 100kms (~61 miles) from São Paulo, but all I got there was a 2-2-1 drop, I even punted the round I drew. I didn’t have a very good deck but I thought i could Top8 with some luck.

** MOCS SEASONS 9~12~POTY~LCQ

That was the worst part of the year for me MTGOwise, I couldn’t even qualify for seasons 9~11. I managed to only get 6 QPs total in those seasons. At least Season 10’s Championship was on the same weekend as GP San Jose, so I wouldn’t be playing it anyway.

That put me out of the POTY Mocs at that time, so I had to play a bit more on Season 12 eventhough it was on the same day as the only IRL PTQ I had to play. With 23 Hard Fought QPs I qualified for the POTY MOCS!

The format for the POTY MOCS was Standard so I just asked around (mainly Rorix and Shooter) what to play. And ended up playing Red splash Black and I had an awesome 4-0 start but after that I didn’t win a single game and ended up at 55^th place, good enough for 6 packs but very disappointing after the 4-0 Start.

To end my year my 2012 season I would play in the December 23th LCQ Mocs that was Sealed. I managed a 8-3 in it but with horrible tiebreakers that put me in 28^th Place.

The end of 2012 was quite aweful for me, after so many seasons I couldn’t even pull a Top8 in any PTQ of the season nor any other good result, so I had to chill down and try to get over it in 2013…

*** GOALS FOR 2013?

Well, as I’m finishing this already in February I’m already playing in the Qualifiers for San Diego. Unfortunately I don’t own a Modern deck neither IRL nor on MTGO so I depend on people borrowing me a few cards and so. Already had to skip a IRL PTQ in Florianopolis (705kms~438 miles distance) and probably will have to do the same for the Brasilia one.

With my buddy Jonais’ help I already played 2 Online Qualifiers with Jund, if I dropped at 1-4 on the first I went all the way until Top8 on the other one. I thought I had a very good chance to win that one but ended up losing to a matchup I felt I’d need to be very unlucky to lose and was comfortable with the eventual Top4/Finals matchups. But still, it put me back in the Top8 of a PTQ and even on MTGo which is way harder than the IRL PTQs we have around.

If I can get some help I hope I can play in the last 2 Online and at least 2 IRL PTQs still this season, now with Gatecrash and with Bloodbraid and Seething Song gone.

My plans are to still evolve my Drafting skills and to get back on the Pro Tour again and this time to get in the Money.
